Answer: Neville Chamberlain

Neville Chamberlain was born in 1869. He became Lord Mayor of Birmingham in 1915 and in 1918 he was elected Conservative M.P. for Ladywood. He held several government posts before becoming Prime Minister in 1937. Despite his close association with appeasement he declared war on Germany after it invaded Poland.
2. 10 May 1940. Winston Churchill became Prime Minister. What position did he hold in the government immediately before becomg Prime Minister?

Answer: First Lord of the Admiralty

As First Lord of the Admiralty he had responsibility for the Royal Navy. However, for most of the 1930s he had been on the backbenches and not very popular with his fellow Conservatives. He was reappointed to the Cabinet when war broke out.
3. 14 May 1940. The Local Defence Volunteers (LDV) were formed. What were they later called?

Answer: The Home Guard

Men between 17 and 65 who were not in the armed forces were asked to form a group which would defend the coastline and factories, and patrol fields where German soldiers might be dropped by parachute. They captured many German soldiers whose planes were shot down. Being in the Home Guard gave men who were in reserved occupations an opportunity to serve their country.

The comedy TV programme 'Dad's Army' gave a humorous account of their deeds.

Answer: Mussolini thought the war was nearly over.

Mussolini thought the war was nearly over and he wanted to take land from British and French colonies and be part of the Peace Conference. 'On to glory and whatever we can grab', was the comment in a David Low cartoon.

This was an air battle where the German Luftwaffe hoped to wipe out the R.A.F. so that they would be able to invade Britain. This did not happen. The R.A.F. had Spitfire and Hurricane fighters. After the Battle of Britain the blitz continued.

While the House of Commons met in the Chamber of the House of Lords the Lords met in the Robing Room of the House of Lords.

Answer: Because Japan bombed Pearl Harbor

On 7th December 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. President Franklin D Roosevelt declared 7th December to be 'a date which will live in infamy'.
8. 6 June 1944. D-Day. What happened on this day?

Answer: The Allies landed in Normandy

160,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in what was known as 'Operation Overlord' The landing on Omaha beach was represented in the film 'Saving Private Ryan'.
9. 8th May 1945. Winston Churchill declares 'Victory in Europe Day'. What had happened to Adolf Hitler?

Answer: He had committed suicide

On 29th April 1945, Hitler married Eva Braun, his mistress, and the next day they both committed suicide (Soviet forces were only a few hundred metres from his bunker in the centre of Berlin).

Answer: Japan

The first atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Many thousands of people were killed instantly and many more died later from burns, radiation sickness and other injuries.
