Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Established in 1860, this one of the oldest family-owned breweries still in operation in the United States in the 2010s.

Answer: August Schell Brewing Company - Minnesota

The August Schell Brewing Company is located in New Ulm, Minnesota. It was founded by German immigrant August Schell in 1860. It is the second oldest family-owned brewery in America - only after D. G. Yuengling & Son in Pennsylvania (1829). I stopped by Schell in 2002 for a visit and thoroughly enjoyed the brewery grounds, especially their beer gnome garden!
2. This popular California brewery brews a myriad of delicious ales, including Celebration, Bigfoot Barleywine, and their famous Pale Ale.

Answer: Sierra Nevada Brewing Company

Sierra Nevada was established in 1979 in Chico, California. They are one of the top breweries operating in the US. Their Pale Ale is the second best-selling craft beer in the US, behind Boston Beer Co's Samuel Adams Boston Lager. I visited here in 2002 and still consider it one of the best breweries I have ever been to.
3. This popular Ohio brewery brews such beers as Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, Commodore Perry IPA and Burning River Pale Ale.

Answer: Great Lakes Brewing Company

Great Lakes is a brewery and brewpub in Cleveland, Ohio. It is the first brewpub and microbrewery in Ohio. In 2011, it was the 18th-largest craft brewery and 27th-largest overall brewery in the US. We toured their impeccable facility in Cleveland, sampled their beers and made some fine memories.
4. This pacific northwest brewery has created many unique brews including Dead Guy Ale, Morimoto Soba Ale and Yellow Snow IPA among many other beers.

Answer: Rogue Ales

Rogue Ales was founded in 1988 in Ashland, Oregon. We had the absolute pleasure of staying at their Beer, Bed and Breakfast in Newport, Oregon, which included a small apartment right above their brewpub and random Rogue beers in the fridge.
5. This Texas Brewery Makes Shiner Bock Beer and is owned by the Gambrinus company.

Answer: Spoetzl Brewing Company

The Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas, started in 1909 as the Shiner Brewing Association, founded by German and Czech immigrants. In 2002, we visited this remote desert brewery. It's a very cool place, built in mission style.
6. Creator of the popular "Fat Tire Amber Ale", this Eco-friendly, Colorado brewery was named the best place to work in America by Outside magazine on 2008.

Answer: New Belgium Brewing Company

About 10% of the New Belgium's brewery power comes from methane gas created as a byproduct of their on-site water treatment system, and all employees are given bicycles. In 2002, we stopped by and had a quick and friendly tour of their facility, and were given a free sampler tray of all their beers, no questions asked!
7. This Indiana micro-brewery makes some of my absolute favorite beers including Alpha King Pale Ale, Black Sun stout and the highly sought after Dark Lord.

Answer: Three Floyds Brewing Company

Three Floyds is a relatively young brewery that was founded in 1996 by brothers Nick and Simon Floyd, along with their father, Mike. Since 2000, the brewery has been located in Munster, Indiana. Our 2002 tour of the brewery consisted of sitting around with owner and brewmaster Nick Floyd, conversing, laughing and of course drinking some beer.
8. This large brewer produced a unique, now discontinued, malt beverage product called Zima.

Answer: Coors Brewing Company

The Coors brewery in Golden, Colorado is the largest single brewery facility in the world. We toured this super-brewery in 2002 and tasted the freshest Coors you could imagine, drawn right from the tanks.
9. This well established mid-western brewery produces brews such as: Berry Weiss, Sunset Wheat and the popular 'Summer Shandy'.

Answer: Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company

During Prohibition, Leinenkugel produced a near beer known as "Leino" as well as soda water. We toured this beautiful brewery in 2002, and got an up-close, and personal view of the inner workings of the brewery. They have one of the best and biggest gift shops, too.
10. We visited this old European brewery in the early 1990s. This brewer makes one of my favorite beers, and favorite style of beer - Pilsner. In fact, THIS beer is considered the original Pilsner, from which many other brewers have tried to emulate over the years.

Answer: Pilsner Urquell - Czech Republic

We stopped by the brewery in Plzeň, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) to see where the famous Pilsner Urquell (Plzeňskż Prazdroj) was made. At that time, they still used huge, open-air wooden fermenting vats - which we were actually allowed to look down into after climbing a ladder! They have since switched to closed stainless steel fermenters.

The local soft water source and use of flavorful Saaz hops makes this beer unique. There was nothing like tasting one of my favorite beers straight from the source.

It is something I will never forget, and am still fond of the beer to this day.
