Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the adventure "S1: The Tomb of Horrors" by Gary Gygax, the players must survive a trap-filled tomb created by a long-dead, evil magic-user/cleric named Acererak. Upon reaching Acererak's final resting place, the players discover only a jewel-encrusted skull. Unfortunately, Acererak's life force can still use the skull as a conduit to steal the players' souls. What is the name given by Gygax to the "creature" that Acererak has become?

Answer: demi-lich

Gygax notes that Acererak was formerly a lich, a type of undead having a physical body on the Prime Material Plane. Acererak maintained his existence as a lich for so long that his lich form expired, and he evolved into a demi-lich.
2. In another classic Gary Gygax adventure, "EX1: Dungeonland", the players stumble upon a conduit that transports them to a strange demi-plane of existence. In fact, Gygax based the inhabitants of this demi-plane upon those described in a classic book. Which book was "Dungeonland" based upon?

Answer: Alice in Wonderland

Among the inhabitants of "Dungeonland" are Chaldros (a senile magic-user who travels about in the form of a "white rabbit"), a rather nasty "Cheshire cat", and a Queen who is likely to scream "Off with their heads!"
3. In the adventure "I6: Ravenloft" by Tracy and Laura Hickman, the players travel into the land of Barovia, which is ruled by a powerful vampire lord (Count Strahd von Zarovich) from his Castle Ravenloft. Certain elements of the Barovian landscape prevent its inhabitants (including the players) from leaving, at least until Count Strahd is destroyed. Which of the following is NOT a barrier to leaving Barovia?

Answer: a wall of force, which surrounds Barovia and can only be deactivated by Count Strahd

The players enter Barovia through one of the ancient iron gates, but neither gate will reopen without Strahd's allowance. The fog and wolves are ubiquitous features of the Barovian landscape, particularly at night.
4. In the three-module "G(iants)" series by Gary Gygax, the players must deal with evil giants that are terrorizing the countryside. With each module, the giants and their allies become more deadly. The first two modules are "G1: Steading of the Hill Giant Chief" and "G2: The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl". What is the title of the final module in this series?

Answer: G3: Hall of the Fire Giant King

In "Hall of the Fire Giant King", the players must confront the fire giant, King Snurre, and his subjects. Other nasty creatures found in this module include hell hounds, trolls, and an ancient red dragon named Brazzemal. This module also introduced the Drow (dark elf) to the AD&D game system.
5. The "G(iants)" series continues when the players discover that the giants' uprising was instigated by the Drow, an evil race of 'dark elves' living in an immense cavern system deep below the Earth's surface. The "D(row)" series also consists of three modules. In the second module of this series, "D2: Shrine of the Kuo-Toa", the players discover an ancient, hostile race of fish-like humanoids named the Kuo-Toa. The Kuo-Toa worship a strange 'Sea Mother' goddess that is half-human, half-lobster. What is the name of this goddess?

Answer: Blibdoolpoolp

The three incorrect answers are the names of deities from other humanoid races as described in the AD&D 2nd edition supplement "Monster Mythology". In each case, the deity is the primary god and creator of the race that worships it (Gruumsh = orcs, Annam = giants, Corellon Larethian = elves).

In addition to the Kuo-Toa, the module also introduces the race of Deep Gnome (Svirfneblin) to the AD&D game system.
6. The epic series of adventures from the "G" and "D" series of modules concludes in "Q1: Queen of the Demonweb Pits", written by Dave Sutherland and Gary Gygax. In this module, the players journey to another plane of existence to confont Lolth (the Demon Queen of Spiders), who is worshipped by the Drow. What plane does Lolth reside in?

Answer: the Abyss

Lolth's Demonweb is found on one of the 666 layers of the Abyss. The four-level Demonweb also contains gates to other layers of the Abyss and to alternate Prime Material Planes. Of course, Lolth's abode is guarded by a slew of horrid creatures including demons of all types, giant spiders and other arachnids, and Drow minions.
7. In module "S2: White Plume Mountain" by Lawrence Schick, the players must retrieve three powerful magic weapons that were stolen from their owners in the city of Greyhawk. Each owner later received a mysterious note signed with the symbol of Keraptis (a powerful magic-user thought to be long dead) that provides a clue to the location of the stolen weapons. What is the unusual location of the dungeon that the players must enter to retrieve the weapons?

Answer: the interior of an active volcano

"White Plume Mountain" refers to the continuous geyser that erupts from the volcano's summit.

The three intelligent magic weapons are Wave, Whelm, and Blackrazor. Wave is a trident whose purpose is to destroy all those who won't convert to the worship of Poseidon. Whelm is a dwarven hammer whose purpose is to kill all giants, trolls, and goblin-type humanoids. Blackrazor is a sword whose purpose is to regularly feed on the souls of living creatures.
8. In Module "I1: Dwellers of the Forbidden City" by David Cook, the players explore the ruins of an ancient city located deep within a tropical jungle. Among the denizens of the city's ruins are a degenerate race of creatures that were once human, but whose lineage has been tainted with serpent blood after centuries of demonic worship. This race was introduced to the AD&D game system for the first time in the pages of this module. What is the name of this part-human, part-serpent race?

Answer: yuan-ti

There are three 'strains' of yuan-ti (pureblood, half-blood, abomination) that vary in the degree of snake characteristics expressed in their physical form. The tasloi are green-skinned humanoids residing in unexplored jungles, that were also introduced to the AD&D game system with this module.
9. In module "S3: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks" by Gary Gygax, the players must locate the source of strange monsters that have been terrorizing the Grand Duchy of Geoff. What is the source of these alien creatures?

Answer: a spaceship from another universe, whose human crew members died enroute from a deadly plague

This module combines elements of fantasy and science-fiction, as the players must deal with androids and robots controlled by the ship's still functional computer system, alien creatures from other worlds, and exposure to radiation leaks. The players also discover strange technological devices such as 'blaster' weapons, laser weapons, powered armor, and anti-gravity belts.
10. In supermodule "T1-4: The Temple of Elemental Evil" by Gary Gygax and Frank Mentzer, the players begin as low-level characters in a small village that is once again threatened by evil humans and monsters dwelling in the Temple of Elemental Evil. After the players become more powerful through a series of adventures, they must enter the Temple dungeons to deal with the renewed forces of evil. But first, what is the name of the small village in which play begins?

Answer: Hommlet

Several years before the supermodule was published, TSR had released module "T1: The Village of Hommlet", which was designed for low-level player characters. The initial module was incorporated into the supermodule, which expanded the adventure into an epic campaign.

The principal mastermind behind the Temple's creation is Zuggtmoy, the Demoness Lady of Fungi, who is native to the Abyss. In the original battle between good and evil, Zuggtmoy was not destroyed, but imprisoned by powerful magic deep within the Temple dungeons.
