Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first treat, the "Good Humor Bar," was created by ice cream parlor owner Harry Burt in the 1920s. To keep the messy chocolate coating from getting all over his customer's hands he put his new treat on a stick. From what other invention of his did he take this idea?

Answer: Jolly Boy Sucker

Information, facts and figures, for this quiz came from an article I read in my local paper "The Decatur Daily" written by Doug Mason from "Scripps Howard News Service." According to the article the company wanted a name that would suggest a happy treat, thus the name "Good Humor".
2. The thing that secured the "Good Humor Bar" name into the American consumer's mind was the "Good Humor Man", the name given to the salesman that delivered the company's product from a truck as the company drove through the local neighborhoods. Which of the following was NOT used by the company to bring more attention of their product to potential customers?

Answer: Honking the horn

The "Good Humor Man" started to fade away in 1976 in favor of the more profitable method of selling it in supermarkets and other such sales outlets. The ice cream bar comes in many flavors including, but not limited to, Strawberry Shortcake, Toasted Almond, and Cookies and Cream.
3. Our second treat strays slightly from the ice cream mode to colored, flavored and frozen water. I'm talking about the treat known as a popsicle. Frank Epperson applied for a patent in 1923 for his new treat. Under what name was this treat patented?

Answer: "Frozen Confectionery"

After Mr. Epperson patented his product he used the name "Epsicle Ice Pop" for sales purposes but his children liked to call it "pop's sicle," which lead to the name it has today.
4. My personal favorite treat consists of a block of ice cream between two graham crackers or cookies. What is this frozen treat called in its basic term?

Answer: Ice cream sandwich

The ice cream sandwich comes in many flavors but my favorite is still vanilla ice cream and chocolate cookies.
5. The next treat, the "Eskimo Pie", came into existence under another name as well. What was the "Eskimo Pie" first called?

Answer: The "I-Scream-Bar"

A salesman/schoolteacher named Christian Kent Nelson came up with this new frozen treat around 1920.
6. How is an "Eskimo Pie" made?

Answer: Dipping an ice cream bar into chocolate

According to the article Mr. Nelson came up with the idea for his creation after seeing a young boy trying to decide to buy either an ice cream or a candy bar with his treat money. In 1921, Mr. Nelson teamed with candy maker Russell C. Stover to produce the re-named "Eskimo Pie".
7. By 1922 how many "Eskimo Pies" were being sold daily?

Answer: 1,000,000

According to the article these were huge sales for the time and supposedly caused a price spike of 50 per cent in the cost of cocoa beans. In 1934 "Eskimo Pies" got a stick added to hold it, which pleased parents as their children's hands stayed much cleaner and less sticky.
8. Pick out the correct word/words that complete this popular slogan for one of these frozen treats. "What would you do for a __________?"

Answer: Klondike Bar

Created in 1922 at the Isaly's Dairy Store in Youngstown, Ohio this treat soon became a favorite on hot days. This treat was made by the Isaly family by dipping squares of vanilla ice cream into Swiss chocolate.
9. Our last two questions are the "Nutty Buddy Bar". How was the original treat made?

Answer: Cone, vanilla ice cream, chocolate, and peanuts

If you go to the grocery store and look in the frozen dairy products section you will find many variations of this tasty treat. According to Mr. Mason, one of the last manufacturers of the original "Nutty Buddy" is the Purity Dairies in Nashville, Tennessee. It is still the number one favorite frozen treat in Nashville.
10. This one is tough, so think hard. What company was the original owner of the name "Nutty Buddy"?

Answer: Seymour Ice Cream Company

It was first manufactured by the now defunct Seymour Ice Cream Company. The Sweetheart Cup Company manufactured the machines that made the cones for the "Nutty Buddy", and ice cream companies that bought them got to use the "Nutty Buddy" name. In the late 1990s, Sweetheart went out of the cone business and the original name has blurred somewhat. I read in the article that Purity Dairies has sent a supply of "Nutty Buddies" to the producers of the show "Sex and the City" shown on HBO. I hope you enjoyed the quiz.
