Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In general, how long can a person survive without water?

Answer: 3 days

Look for a source of water before you run out! People need at least 1 cup (8 oz.) per day to survive. Try looking in valley bottoms where water would naturally flow to. If no water can be seen, look for areas of green trees or bushes and try digging there. Water may be just under the surface.
2. Drinking urine is safe.

Answer: false

You should NEVER just drink urine; but by distilling it, drinkable water can be produced.
3. What is the first step in testing a plant to see if it is safe to eat?

Answer: inspect it

Inspecting a plant is most important. If it has been eaten by bugs or is slimy it will have little food value. It can also become toxic over time. NEVER eat any plant that you have not determined to be safe. If it does NOT smell bitter, does NOT irritate your skin, does NOT cause an unpleasant sensation in your mouth or throat when you finally taste it then you can swallow a small amount. Eat and drink nothing else for 5 hours, and if there is no adverse reaction it can be considered safe.
4. It is safe to eat ants if they are cooked.

Answer: true

They must be cooked for at least 6 minutes to destroy any poison. Some ants known as honey- or sugar-pot ants have a swollen abdomen full of nectar that make them better eating.
5. Which of the following plants is NOT safe to eat?

Answer: foxgloves

All parts of the foxglove plant are toxic and will affect the heart.
6. Which would be the best and safest safe place to camp?

Answer: near water and wood

Hilltops are often exposed to wind, valley bottoms can frost at night if the sky is clear and game trails can expose you to dangerous animals or being trampled by a herd. Being close to a supply of wood and water is ideal, but not so close to the water as to be bothered by insects or have the sound of the water drown out sounds of possible danger or rescue.
7. Finish this sentence: Being able to start and maintain a fire is very important because...

Answer: ...it provides warmth and a means of cooking and boiling water.

It is extremely important to be able to light and maintain a fire in any place and under any circumstances. It is needed for warmth, cooking, boiling water, protection from wildlife and signaling for help. All these things can mean the difference between life and death!
8. You should never walk at night.

Answer: false

Walking at night may be necessary in an emergency situation and can be a more comfortable time to walk if you are in the desert. Walk slowly, making sure the ground is stable before putting your full weight on your foot.
9. It is okay to cover a tourniquet with another dressing, bandage or clothing.

Answer: false

A tourniquet should never be covered, and if left on too long could result in loss of the limb.
10. What is the rescue code for SOS using sound blasts or light flashes?

Answer: 3 short, 3 long, 3 short

Whether using sound or light, it should be repeated at 1-minute intervals.
