Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Initials, initials, initials VB. The label is mostly green, but what colour are the initials?

Answer: Black

The VB label is a thing of great beauty. M. Gainsbourg wouldn't have touched the stuff unless someone had taken the trouble of distilling it for him.
2. What great Australian actor stars in the Cooper's Home Brew video?

Answer: Paul Mercurio

Son of professional American pre-Federation period expat and boxing trainer Gus, Paul likes to make it himself!
3. Generally associated with dollar pot nights and venues with cover charges too prohibitive to leave, which semi-mythical lager is made in a variety of locations?

Answer: Geelong Bitter

Geelong Bitter is sometimes made in Geelong, sometimes in Richmond (Victoria), and is reputedly a blend of excess beer runs. Hangover assured!
4. Which Geelong beer evokes a famous San Franscican brewing style?

Answer: Steampacket

Named after the steamers that carried the gold rush to San Franscisco via the Panama Canal, the Geelong version is inconsistent but capable of great things.
5. What is unusual about the brothers Foster who created Fosters Lager in the 1880s?

Answer: They were American

Australian lager, heavily influenced by the Fosters' style, can actually be traced through the United States strand of lager, although Australia thankfully never experienced wowserism to the same extent that has seen the prevalent American lagers brewed to 3.5 percent (as Elvis Costello once said of Kansas City beer, you can get fat before you get drunk).
6. The 'Mad Brewers' shamelessly describe themselves as a splinter group from which underachieving Sydney brewery?

Answer: Hahn

The Hahn is actually owned by Tooheys, and its doyen Dr Chuck Hahn (another American) owns not it but his own Malt Shovel Brewery. The Malt Shovel Brewery markets itself as recreating brews in the style of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries under the name of Australia's first known brewer, James Squire (Real Ale, Porter, India Pale Ale, Pilsner), and explains why Sydney's penal community drank rum at that time.

The Mad Brewers make small runs of the sort of decent beer Hahn doesn't go in for.
7. You would find a standard Australian six pack of beer inside which of these?

Answer: A Darwin Stubby

Unless it's been opened! A Darwin Stubby contains 2.25 litres of a beer very similar to bottled Carlton Draught, which is six times 375 mL. If any Americans are reading this, you can sometimes catch Australian parliamentary question time on C-Span, which is always good entertainment.
8. What style of beer is Matilda Bay's flagship beer of the same name?

Answer: Pilsner

This beer is rather nice.
9. Probably the most beautiful beer label of them all, what motif does Abbotsford Invalid Stout bear on its label?

Answer: A handshake

For the conspiracy theorists amongst you, is it any wonder that that Abbotsford is right next to Melbourne's old Masonic precinct? Food for thought there!
10. We're still waiting for a wit to say the best thing about the Australian world of brewing is the New Zealand world of brewing, but it would be so true. From which stunning New Zealand city do Emerson's and Speights hail?

Answer: Dunedin

Emerson's is a very small brewery that ranks with Victoria's Holgate as one of the best breweries in the Southern Hemisphere. Speights isn't so good, nor DB. Dunedin is Gaelic for Edinburgh.
