Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What happened in the United States in the first half of the 20th Century that resulted in a dramatic increase in the production of non-alcoholic beer?

Answer: Prohibition/the Volstead Act

The prohibition of the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in 1919 left breweries with few choices to stay in business. Every national brewery (e.g. Anheuser-Busch, Miller, Pabst and Schlitz) and many local breweries converted their factories to the production of non-alcoholic beer.
2. Who manufactures Sharp's Beer in the United States?

Answer: MillerCoors

Since 2008, Miller and Coors have united to form the MillerCoors Brewing Company, which continues to produce the former Miller's product Sharp's. Sharp's was introduced in 1989. There is an unrelated Sharp's Brewery in Cornwall, England, which produces Doom Bar Ale, Eden Pure Ale and Orchard Cider, all of which are alcoholic.
3. The famous Irish brewing company Guinness produces and exports a non-alcoholic beer. What is its name?

Answer: Kaliber

Kaliber is technically a pale lager. The Guinness Brewing Company was purchased by Diageo, an international company, in 1997 but retains its Irish branding.
4. How much alcohol may a beer contain and still be labeled "non-alcoholic" in most places?

Answer: 0.5% ABV

ABV stands for "alcohol by volume" and is the measurement used worldwide to express the ethanol content of a beverage at 20 degrees C. The United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union all use the 0.5% ABV standard to define non-alcoholic beer.
5. Where is the non-alcoholic beer Clausthaler NA brewed?

Answer: Germany

Clausthaler Non-Alcoholic Brew was introduced in 1979 and has gained worldwide distribution since. The Clausthaler brand is owned by the Radeberger Group which is owned by Dr. Oetker, a German limited partnership.
6. Which non-alcoholic beer and non-alcoholic amber beer is brewed by Anheuser-Busch?

Answer: O'Doul's

During Prohibition, Anheuser-Busch brewed Bevo, a non-alcoholic malt beverage, which prepared the company to introduce a contemporary non-alcoholic beer.
7. How do brewers get the alcohol out of alcoholic beer?

Answer: All of these methods are used modernly

The problem with boiling the alcohol out of beer once it has been made is that boiling significantly changes the flavour of the brew. The reverse osmosis method does not have this fault in that the essence of the beer is not boiled.
8. In what country is the dark alcohol-free beer Cheers Preta brewed?

Answer: Portugal

Introduced in 2000, this is one of the few non-alcoholic black beers on the market. The manufacturer, Uniao Cervejeira (Unicer), does not support bullfighting, which makes this beer popular with vegans.
9. In what country is Kirin Free beer manufactured?

Answer: Japan

The Japanese brewery which makes Kirin Free has produced a product which is very popular in Japan and is gaining an international market. It is remarkable in that it is completely alcohol free (because of a brewing process which uses no yeast) and has only 37 calories per serving.
10. Why might some people prefer to drink non-alcoholic beer over beer containing alcohol?

Answer: All of these are possible reasons

Non-alcoholic beers generally have substantially fewer calories than their alcoholic counterparts and are therefor a good choice for dieters. Some recovering alcoholics successfully replace beer containing alcohol with the non-alcoholic kind; other recovering alcoholics think this ill-advised. Since the 1980s, with the help of Hiram Walker and Sons, the Harvard School of Public Health, and President Bill Clinton, the use of designated drivers (who abstain from drinking and drive companions home) has grown substantially in the US and Canada.
