Question 1 of 10
1. Just to refresh your memory, "Settlers of Catan" is a strategy game where players build settlements and cities on a board adjacent to various resource hexagons. At each roll of the die, players gain the resources that the number rolled is on, and use their turns to attempt to gain victory points that will enable you to win. This is the Reader's Digest supremely condensed version. But to get started there are 5 resources on a basic "Settlers", "Cities" and "Seafarers" board. Which of the ones listed below is not a resource? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. At the start of the game (specifically "Settlers" and Seafarers") each player will have 2 settlements and 2 roads on the board. You get to place where these go as long as they are more than 2 spots away from any other settlement. You can gain 2 victory points in the games by having the longest road. How many road portions does it take to have the longest road? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. In two of the games you can also have the largest army. This occurs when you buy development cards using sheep, wheat and rock resources. The soldier card enables you to move what is called the "robber" piece to any spot on the board, take a card from the player that it affects and it prevents that player(s) from collecting that particular resource on a die roll. There is one game of the 3 that does not have a largest army. Which one is it? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Lets talk about some of the resources for a minute. In addition to wood, what other resource do you need to build a road?

Answer: (One word)
Question 5 of 10
5. In addition to ore/rock, what other resource do you need to upgrade your settlement into a city?

Answer: (One Word)
Question 6 of 10
6. How many victory points does it take to win "Settlers of Catan" & "Seafarers of Catan"? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. In "Cities & Knights of Catan" the basic rules set out in the previous games are used, but then a few other things are thrown in to challenge you. I mentioned knights earlier. There are 3 levels of knights and their primary purpose is to defend your area from the barbarians that attack. You make the barbarians come closer every time you roll a 6 sided die and it comes up with the black barbarian ship. Whan it attacks, you count up the number of cities that are currently on the board. That equals the strength of the barbarian attack. You need to have that many or more active knights on the board to repel the barbarian. What two resources does it take to "buy" a knight? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Another cool add-on to "Cities" consists of commodity cards. In the other two games if you had a city on a resource when that die roll is cast, you would accumulate two of that resource. In "Cities" if you have a city on rock/ore, wood and sheep instead of two of that resource you will get a resource and its equivalent commodity. The commidites actually enable you to buy additions to your city in 3 different areas. When you get to a certain point in the city additions you will have created a metropolis that makes your city worth 4 victory points. Yahoo--that is nearly 1/3 of the points necessary to win the game right there. I stated that there are 3 commodity cards. So which one listed below is not a commodity card? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. In "Cities" you also have a chance to meet the merchant. This is a purple cone shaped piece that enables you to trade any resource at a specific ratio. What ratio is that? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The games are all addicting fun but there is a limited number of people that can play unless you buy the expansion pack. What is the maximum number of players to each board without the expansion pack?

Answer: (number please)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Water

The resources are wheat/straw; wood; sheep; clay and rock. All of these resources are used throughout the game in various combinations to build roads, build cities and settlements and buy development cards.

Answer: 5

The first person to have 5 portions of road in a row gains this card and two victory points. This can easily be taken away though if another play builds a road longer than yours. In "Cities" each players places a settlement and city on the board before the start of the game.

Answer: Cities and Knights

The correct answer is "Cities & Knights". In "Cities" you omit development cards and now have progress cards. There are some of these that are called the "Bishop" card that enable you to move the robber to any space you want. You can also move the robber by rolling the number 7, or in "Cities" by having an active knight available to chase away the robber.
4. Lets talk about some of the resources for a minute. In addition to wood, what other resource do you need to build a road?

Answer: Clay

Clay and wood will enable you to build roads. Not only will having the longest road gain you points, but by branching out you can build more settlements and cities.
5. In addition to ore/rock, what other resource do you need to upgrade your settlement into a city?

Answer: Wheat

3 ore and 2 grain/wheat will build you a city. One city is worth 2 victory points.
6. How many victory points does it take to win "Settlers of Catan" & "Seafarers of Catan"?

Answer: 10

It is 10 for both of those games, and jumps to 13 points for "Cities and Knights".

Answer: Sheep & Rock

One sheep and one rock will buy you a knight, and also promote that knight from a basic 1pt knight up to a 2-3 point knight. A wheat is necessary to "feed" or activate that knight, thus enabling him to fend off barbarian attacks and a host of other things.

Answer: dye

Coin is rock/ore's commodity card, paper is wood's commodity card, and cloth is sheep's commodity card. Having a city on wheat or clay only results in double clay and wheat.
9. In "Cities" you also have a chance to meet the merchant. This is a purple cone shaped piece that enables you to trade any resource at a specific ratio. What ratio is that?

Answer: 2:1 (2 for 1)

When you draw the appropriate progress card that entitles you to the merchant, you can place it on any resource hexagon you are adjacent to. You are then able to trade that resource 2:1, which helps a great deal. Sometimes in setting up you are unable to get a certain resource.

There are also ports thru-out the board that if you have a settlement on will enable you to trade 3:1 of either a specific resource or any. During regular play you can always trade 4:1.
10. The games are all addicting fun but there is a limited number of people that can play unless you buy the expansion pack. What is the maximum number of players to each board without the expansion pack?

Answer: 4

If you purchase the add-on expansion packs, it enables up to 6 people to play. Thanks for playing. I realize that unless you have played these games the rules may seem a bit confusing. This is just a brief overview. It's tough to explain the game unless you can actually play it. Perhaps this quiz will whet your appetite to do just that.
