Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is the most popular cheese in the U.K?

Answer: Cheddar

Cheddar is the biggest selling cheese in the U.K. 51% of the cheese sold in the UK is Cheddar. Cheddar originated in the village of Cheddar in Somerset close to the famous Cheddar Gorge with its ancient and beautiful caves. Historically the cheese was left in these caves to mature because the temperature and humidity there was suitable for this purpose. Unfortunately its name was not properly protected under law, and any location can now make cheese called Cheddar.
2. What is the name of the Dutch round cheese with a bright red rind on it?

Answer: Edam

Edam cheese comes from the town of Edam in the Netherlands. It is popular with slimmers because it contains considerably less calories than most other cheeses e.g. 326 for 100 grams as opposed to 403 in 100 grams of Cheddar. The usual red coating is for young cheeses, but those that have matured for more than seventeen weeks have a black coating.
3. Which cheese would you find in a traditional Greek salad?

Answer: Feta

Greek Feta is made either with sheep's milk or with a mixture of sheep's and goat's milk. It is a crumbly white cheese often served in salads with olive oil, but can be used in many other ways to replace other cheeses in a recipe. It has a slightly sharp flavour.
4. In which country of Europe is Roquefort cheese produced?

Answer: France

The French call Roquefort 'The King of Cheeses' but the English would be inclined to claim that honour for Stilton. Roquefort is made from sheep's milk and each kilogram of finished cheese requires about 4.5 litres of milk. Unlike Cheddar, the name Roquefort is protected by the EU and it may only be used to describe cheese made in the original area.
5. Which two cheeses are used in a traditional Swiss fondue?

Answer: Emmental and Gruyere

Emmental and Gruyere are both produced in Switzerland. Fondue is made from equal parts of these two cheeses, white wine, lemon juice, garlic, cornflour and kirsch. Cubes of bread are required for dipping in the delicious mixture with forks. Fondue parties were popular in the 1970s.
6. Which country does Gorgonzola cheese come from?

Answer: Italy

This wonderful cheese is produced in the Lombardy region of Italy. It is made from cow's milk and can vary considerably in texture from firm to very crumbly. It is blue veined and together with Roquefort and Stilton is often considered one of the best blue cheeses in the world.
7. What is a croque monsieur?

Answer: A cheese and ham sandwich

Croque monsieur is a very popular snack in France. It is a cheese and ham sandwich, either fried or toasted. Gruyere cheese is most frequently used but there are other options. Croque madame is a variation of the dish with a fried egg on the top.
8. What colour is Camembert cheese?

Answer: White

This creamy white cheese was first made in the late 18th century in the village of Camembert in Normandy France. It is often compared to Brie which comes from the area of Brie in the western region of Poitou-Charentes. It is said that it was first made by a farmer who sought advice from a priest who came from Brie, and it is very similar to Brie cheese.

It is made from cow's milk and is soft and white.
9. Where did Jarlsberg cheese originate?

Answer: Norway

Jarlsberg cheese is made from cow's milk and is a mild cheese with large irregular holes. The size of the holes indicates the age of the cheese, and it is manufactured from a much treasured secret recipe. Jarlsberg is often confused with Swiss Cheese because of the holes but it is produced in Norway.
10. Which of these four is NOT one of the three top selling cheese in the U.S.A?

Answer: Feta

The most popular cheese in the U.S.A. is mozzarella at around 20%. It is the cheese usually used on pizza. Traditionally mozzarella is made in southern Italy from the milk of buffalos, but now buffalo milk is scarce and it is sometimes made from cow's milk. Cheddar and Parmesan make up about 15% of U.S. cheese sales each.
