Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When is there a blockade?

Answer: When a pawn is prevented from moving because an enemy piece is in front

Pawns can't capture forward, so capturing diagonally is the only way they can move.
2. What is a flank pawn?

Answer: A pawn not in the two center files

Pawns with no enemy pawns on adjacent files or the same file, are called passed pawns.
3. Which of these outcomes are possible in an endgame if White has a rook and a king, Black has a knight and a king, there are no other pieces, and it is Black's turn to move?

Answer: The position could be a win for White, a win for Black, or a draw

Some possible positions are wins for White, if Black's knight is away from his king, and White's pieces can attack the knight until it is trapped. Mostly every other position is a draw, unless Black makes a mistake and gives White a winning position. Very few positions are wins for Black. If there's a White king on h1, a Black knight on f5, a White rook on h2, and a Black king on f1, Black can play Ng3# and White's rook is blocking his king.

There are different positions similar to this where Black can win, but they will probably never appear in a real chess game.
4. What piece is the attacker in a royal fork?

Answer: knight

A royal fork is when a knight forks the king and the queen.
5. What is the English meaning of FIDE (as a chess term)?

Answer: International Chess Federation

FIDE stands for Federation Internationale des Echecs, but translating to English it's 'International Chess Federation'.
6. What is a game of chess called, if neither player can see the board?

Answer: blindfold chess

The players call the moves out verbally, while they keep the board position memorized in their head.
7. Which of these is not a name describing an untalented chess player?

Answer: Luft

Luft is a German term which means air.
8. What is spite check?

Answer: A check that stalls checkmate for a few moves

Two pieces checking the king at the same time is called double check.
9. What is it called when one player plays multiple games with different opponents?

Answer: simul

Some simul games are with over 100 opponents!
10. Playing e6 in response to e4 is commonly known as the ______ Defense.

Answer: French

The main line of the French Defense is 1.e4 e6, 2.d4 d5, 3.e5 c5, 4.c3
11. What is a bad bishop?

Answer: A bishop that is blocked from movement by pawns

The only way to free a bad bishop is by moving one of the pawns out of the way.
12. What is an isolated pawn?

Answer: A pawn with no friendly pawns on adjacent files

Isolated pawns become targets because other pawns can't protect them.
13. What time control setting would fall under the category of rapid chess?

Answer: Game in 15 minutes, no increment

Rapid chess encompasses all time controls between 10 and 60 minutes per game. While a control of 30 seconds per move would likely yield games in that length, it would be considered a blitz game as the terminology does not look at the increment.
14. What is a desperate move in a losing position that tries to lure the opponent into a trap?

Answer: swindle

A swindle can also be called a cheapo.
15. What is the most common meaning of an open chess tournament?

Answer: a tournament where players of any rating strength can enter

Players that play in open tournaments can be rated 202, or 1688, or 2800.
