Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the term 'En Prise' mean?

Answer: When a piece is left hanging and is not protected by another piece

If you are attacking a piece with another piece, and there is no other piece protecting it, the piece is hanging and can be taken.
2. In chess, what is a novelty?

Answer: A move in the opening that has never been seen

Some people do novelties in the opening in order to make their opponent take longer on their turn.
3. What is zugzwang?

Answer: When you can't make a move without giving your opponent an advantage

Zugzwang is usually in the endgame, where you would prefer to do nothing, because all other moves result in material loss, checkmate, etc.
4. What is an advanced pawn?

Answer: A pawn in your opponent's territory

Sometimes advanced pawns are dangerous if they are not well protected.
5. What is a rook lift?

Answer: When a rook is moved in front of its pawns relatively early in the game

Rook lifts can be powerful attacks but also expose the rook. The second factor usually dominates, so they are rarely seen in higher level play.
6. What is a Round Robin tournament where there are four players (three rounds) per section.

Answer: Quad

In a Round Robin tournament, everyone in a section plays everyone else in the same section.
7. What is an 'Expert?'

Answer: Someone with a rating between 2000 and 2199

There are no rating requirements for masters or grandmasters, but in order to obtain a title of "master" or "grand master", you have to attain 3 grand master performance ratings at different FIDE tournaments.
8. When is 'National Chess Day' in the US?

Answer: October 9

Gerald Ford established the date in 1976.
9. What is the opposite of a clearance sacrifice?

Answer: obstruction sacrifice

A clearance sacrifice is a sacrifice made to control important squares or free up space for a stronger piece. An obstruction sacrifice is made to block a file or to keep your opponent from attacking certain squares.
10. What word is used to describe it when a pawn is promoted to a rook, knight, or bishop?

Answer: underpromotion

A pawn is usually only promoted to something that is not a queen in order to keep from stalemating their opponent, or to checkmate their opponent with a knight.
