Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these statements is NOT true about Eighth Edition?

Answer: It was the first set to feature a new card back

The card backs of Magic: The Gathering will likely never be changed, as it would make the new cards incompatible with the old ones. Eighth Edition's new card front featured a box for power and toughness, a new font, and a new tap symbol.
2. Which card was included from "Fallen Empires"?

Answer: Orcish Spy

Rukh Egg was from "Arabian Nights". Zur's Weirding was from "Ice Age". Hymn to Tourach was from "Fallen Empires", but wasn't included in Eighth Edition.
3. Which of these cards included in Eighth Edition is the oldest?

Answer: Flying Carpet

Diving Griffin was from "Prophecy". Blinding Angel was from "Nemesis". Creeping Mold was from "Visions". Flying Carpet was from "Arabian Nights", which was the first expansion set, and released in 1993, making it the oldest.
4. Many of the cards in Eighth Edition were from a "wish list" of cards the developers wished to include in the Core Set, after discovering gaps in Seventh Edition or cards that needed tweaking. Which block were many of these "wish list" cards created in?

Answer: "Odyssey"

A couple such cards were Zombify, a cleaned up version of Animate Dead, and Chastise, a weakened version of Exile.
5. Which black "tutor" appeared in Eighth Edition? Tutors are cards which allow you to search your library for a specific card to put into your hand.

Answer: Diabolic Tutor

Demonic Tutor was much too good, and Vampiric Tutor was found to be too good as well. Diabolic Tutor was a properly-priced version of Demonic Tutor that was included in "Odyssey". Evil Tutor doesn't exist.
6. Which card was Telepathy designed to replace? Telepathy requires your opponents to play with their hands revealed.

Answer: Glasses of Urza

Glasses of Urza was thought to be clunky in that it forced players to constantly reveal their hands. Also, they felt the card worked better as a blue enchantment.
7. Five "dual lands", cards which produce two colors of mana, were put into Eighth Edition as uncommons. Which five were they?

Answer: Coastal Tower, Elfhame Palace, Salt Marsh, Urborg Volcano, Shivan Oasis

This cycle of dual lands come into play tapped, and first appeared in "Invasion". Of them, only Elfhame Palace received new artwork.
8. Many cards in Eighth Edition share the exact same mechanics and casting cost as cards in previous editions, but their colors were changed. What color did the new version of Disenchant appear in?

Answer: Green

Naturalize is the green version of Disenchant, and first appeared in "Onslaught". This change was intended to better represent green's hatred of artifacts and the unnatural.
9. After losing Disenchant, which card did white gain to combat enchantments?

Answer: Demystify

Naturalize is green, and Suntail Hawk and Rain of Blades don't affect enchantments.
10. Some cards did not change color or casting cost, but their creature type was changed. One such card is Merfolk of the Pearl Trident, which was replaced by Fugitive Wizard. Why were the Merfolk changed?

Answer: It didn't make sense to summon aquatic creatures into a land-based duel

The feel of Magic was supposed to be a land-based duel, and it didn't really make much sense to be summoning sharks and merfolk into the middle of a land battle. Since wizards were supposed to be blue's representative creature type, a 1/1 wizard with no other abilities was created to replace the merfolk.
11. Although the basic set doesn't normally include cards that create token creatures, one card which does was included in Eighth Edition as a rare. Which card was this?

Answer: Rukh Egg

Rukh Egg creates a 4/4 flyer when killed, and first appeared in "Arabian Nights" as a common. An exception was made to bring back this card as a rare into Eighth Edition.
12. Which of these mechanics appeared on cards in Eighth Edition?

Answer: Haste

Creatures with haste may attack the turn they're brought into play. The other mechanics are too confusing for a set intended for new players.
13. A black card named Mind Sludge appeared in Eighth Edition. It can make your opponent discard a card from their hand for every swamp you control. Which set did Mind Sludge first appear in?

Answer: "Torment"

"Torment" was the first expansion set to be intentionally imbalanced toward a particular color, having many more black cards and many fewer white and green cards.
14. A number of cards from "Ice Age" appeared in Eighth Edition. Which of these cards had never appeared in the base set before?

Answer: Vexing Arcanix

All of these cards appear in Eighth Edition, but Vexing Arcanix had never been printed in the base set before. Wrath of Marit Lage was also a newcomer from "Ice Age" to the base set.
15. Which of these cards from "Alliances" made it into Eighth Edition?

Answer: Guerrilla Tactics

The most potent effect of Guerrilla Tactics is when an opponent forces you to discard it from your hand, making it a useful defense against discard decks.
16. What staple blue card was removed from the base set in Eighth Edition?

Answer: Counterspell

Counterspell, the canonical counterspell for two blue mana. Blue received other counters in Eighth Edition--namely Flash Counter, Remove Soul, and Rewind--but none so effective or efficient as the basic Counterspell.
17. Which blue card from "Homelands" appeared in Eighth Edition?

Answer: Merchant Scroll

Aether Storm and Spectral Bears didn't appear in Eighth Edition. Anaba Shaman did, but it's red, not blue. "Homelands" wasn't known for having a lot of great cards, but Merchant Scroll can prove to be very powerful in the right deck.
18. Five Avatars appeared in "Prophecy", but only one of them made it into Eighth Edition. Which one?

Answer: Avatar of Hope

The Avatars are powerful creatures which cost much less to play under certain circumstances. For instance, Avatar of Hope will cost you only two white mana to play, provided you're at 3 life or less!
19. One white card from "Portal Three Kingdoms" appeared in Eighth Edition. Which one?

Answer: Peach Garden Oath

Ambition's Cost was black, Wrath of God was not from "Portal Three Kingdoms", and False Defeat did not appear in Eighth Edition. Peach Garden Oath was chosen as it reflected a crucial point in the storyline "Portal Three Kingdoms" was based around.
20. At least one card from every set ever produced for Magic: The Gathering was included in Eighth Edition, except one set. Which set featured no cards in Eighth Edition?

Answer: "Unglued"

No cards were added from "Unglued" for various reasons, since most of them were unsuitable, and the set wasn't allowed in tournament play. "Unglued" was intended as a joke set, and featured strange mechanics such as standing up, flapping your arms, and clucking like a chicken to give Mesa Chicken flying until end of turn.
