Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Stiegl is a relatively light beer. The Stiegl brewery was founded in 1492. From which of these countries does Stiegl come?

Answer: Austria

The Stiegl brewery is located in Salzburg. There is a restaurant attached to the brewery, so stop in to enjoy a cold Stiegl beer.
2. Duvel was founded in 1871 by Jan-Leonard Moortgat, who descended from a family of brewers in this country.

Answer: Belgium

Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat is a Flemish (Belgian) family-owned brewery. Duvel is the Flemish word for "devil" (the standard Dutch word however being "duivel"). If you have too many Duvels, you will understand why it may be referred to as the devil!
3. Mythos is a light, straw-colored, pilsner style lager introduced in 1997. From which of these countries does Mythos come?

Answer: Greece

The Mythos Brewery is the second largest brewery in Greece.
4. 1664 must have been a very good year for beer because it is the name of a very popular beer in Europe. From which country?

Answer: France

1664 is the most common (and popular) beer in France. It is very light and is a nice change of pace from the wonderful wines in France every once in a while.
5. The Grolsch brewery was founded in 1615. This brewery was heavily damaged during a fireworks disaster on 13 May 2000. Where is this beer brewed?

Answer: The Netherlands

The Grolsch brewery was founded in 1615 in Groenlo, the Netherlands (after Heineken). I was living in the Netherlands at the time of the fireworks disaster. It was a huge story in the Netherlands because of the spectacular fire that resulted from the accident, because of the great damage and because of the popularity of Grolsch beer.
6. Stella Artois is a lager first brewed in this country as a Christmas brew.

Answer: Belgium

Stella Artois has won many awards and is considered one of the best beers in the world. I have travelled many times to Belgium and especially enjoy some of the lesser known beers that are brewed throughout the country.
7. Carlsberg is a large brewing company founded in 1847 by J. C. Jacobsen after the name of his son Carl (Carl Jacobsen). Which country is home to Carlsberg?

Answer: Denmark

The headquarters are in Copenhagen, Denmark. The company's main brand is Carlsberg Beer, but it also brews Tuborg as well as local beers.
8. The Bass & Co Brewery was established by William Bass in 1777 and brewed Bass Ale in this country.

Answer: England

The brewing business of Bass was bought by the Belgian brewer Interbrew in June 2000. After the Competition Commission had considered the potential monopoly concerns arising from the deal, Interbrew disposed of Bass Brewers Limited to Coors (now Molson Coors Brewing Company).
9. Guinness is a dry stout that originated in Arthur Guinness's St. James's Gate Brewery. In which country did Guinness originate?

Answer: Ireland

Guinness is now available around the world, but still heavily associated with Ireland. Its parent company has been headquartered in London since 1932 and was later merged with Grand Metropolitan plc and developed into a multi-national alcohol conglomerate named Diageo.
10. The Amstel brewery was founded on June 11, 1870 in this country and named after the Amstel River, the waters of which also served for refrigeration.

Answer: The Netherlands

For the purpose of storing the beer, winter ice from the canals was kept in special double-walled cellars. Originally, the beer was mostly drunk in Amsterdam. I really do not know why, but I find it interesting that you can only get Amstel light (not Amstel) in the United States and you can only get Amstel (not Amstel light) in the Netherlands.
