Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The cheesecake recipe I am using calls for four tablespoons of red prawn. What should I add?

Answer: Durian

Red Prawn is a variety of durian grown mainly in Malaysia and is one of the larger and more expensive varieties of this pungent fruit. It takes its name from the way the pinkish coloured and slightly curved flesh of the fruit resembles an actual prawn.
2. A nine square mile area of West Yorkshire UK, has Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status for this crop which is harvested by candlelight. Which fruit are we talking about?

Answer: Rhubarb

The Rhubarb Triangle, as the area is known was awarded PDO status in 2010, putting this rhubarb on a par with champagne and parma ham. The crop spends two years in a field without being harvested before being moved into a heated shed and kept in complete darkness, which gives the fruit a wonderful sweet/sour flavour.

After three to five months in the shed, pickers pull the stalks in candlelight as any exposure to strong light will stop the plant's growth.
3. Which fruit, native to South America, and commonly called the custard apple, did Mark Twain refer to as "the most delicious fruit known to men"?

Answer: Cherimoya

Also known as the ice cream fruit, the cherimoya has a taste which seems to combine banana, papaya, peach, pineapple and strawberry, or according to some, tastes like bubblegum, and it's not just Twain that was a fan of them. Famed botanist Berthold Seemann said the taste of the cherimoya "surpasses that of every other fruit" and 18th century Czech botanist Thaddeus Haenke described them as a masterpiece of Nature.

The plant has adapted well to growing in Central America as well as California and warmer areas of Europe such as Italy and Spain.
4. Which fruit is the largest tree-borne fruit, with specimens regularly weighing in at 23 kg (50 lb) as well as being the national fruit of Sri Lanka?

Answer: Jackfruit

The jackfruit truly is a monster when you consider that fruit of 34.5 kg (76 lb) and 57.46 cm (22.6″) long have been recorded. Native to Asia, the fruit is used in traditional breakfast dishes as well as curries and as a dessert and can also be sliced and deep fried to make jackfruit chips.
5. Tasting like a combination of banana, cucumber and lime, which fruit, yellow on the outside and lime green within, was deemed to look so strange it featured on an episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" as a Golana melon?

Answer: African Horned Cucumber

The African horned cucumber, also known as the blowfish fruit, or kiwano in New Zealand or cuke asaurus in parts of USA has a spiky exterior and jelly like fruit. It is native to South Africa but is now grown as far afield as USA, Portugal and Israel.
6. Southwell in Nottinghamshire UK is where an apple tree planted in 1809 is still producing fruit in 2018. Which variety of apple, of which 83,000 tonnes are now grown in Britain annually, is this?

Answer: Bramley

The Bramley is a tart tasting apple making it ideal for cooking and baking, although it is relatively unknown outside UK, apart from Japan where it is revered. In 2016, it was confirmed that the original tree has "honey fungus" for which there is no cure and the tree is slowly dying, leading a Japanese man to make the journey to see the tree and stand before it weeping.

The name of the variety comes from Matthew Bramley who owned the garden in which the tree stands in the 1850s, and sold the first cuttings from it.
7. The black sapote, a Mexican native fruit, is said to taste like what?

Answer: Chocolate Pudding

With a texture, taste and colour similar to chocolate pudding, the black sapote sounds like a perfect fruit to me. Healthy chocolate at last! The fruit is now also grown in USA and Australia and as well as eaten raw, it can be used in cooking, particularly when combined with vanilla to make a chocolate pudding bread, similar to banana bread.
8. Which city in Saskatchewan Canada takes its name from a fruit which is prevalent in the area?

Answer: Saskatoon

Saskatoons, also called pigeon berries are small purple berries with a slightly nutty taste that grow across much of Canada and make delicious pies and jams, as well as being used by BC brewery Fuggles & Warlock's to make a very tasty sour ale. Although they have been eaten by Canadians for centuries, when they were first imported into UK in 2004, they were banned, subject to two years testing, to decide whether they were safe to eat. Thanks to journalist and future Home Secretary Boris Johnson campaigning on their behalf, the EU decided that saskatoons are safe to eat and forced the UK to overturn their ban.
9. In the early 20th century, the plant of which fruit threatened to wipe out the logging industry in USA and as a result was eradicated in the wild, and saw commercial growing banned?

Answer: Blackcurrant

Blackcurrants act as a vector for, and spread a fungus known as white pine blister rust, leading to fears that if uncontrolled, the spread of the bush could effect and kill pine trees throughout USA. As a result of this ban, many Americans have never tasted the wonder of Ribena, a blackcurrant cordial that is very popular in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
10. Mortgage Lifter, Mr. Stripey and Paul Robeson are all varieties of which fruit, the juice of which is believed to help when your dog has been sprayed by a skunk?

Answer: Tomato

The Paul Robeson is named after the famous singer and has a sweet smoky flavour whereas Mr. Stripey has a mild, but still sweet taste and also has a yellow and red striped exterior, and is often yellow inside. Mortgage Lifters are also mild and sweet but very large, often tipping the scales at a kilogram each. Tomato juice is often used to rid a dog of skunk odour, I remember when I lived in southern Alberta, our dog was sprayed several times one night and we bought the 24 hour gas bar out of tomato juice and V8 juice. Got him in the bath and poured bottle after bottle on him and rubbed it in, then he decided to shake. To say the bathroom looked like a scene from a Tarantino movie is an understatement, but at least Dempsey smelled sweeter.
