Food History, part 2 Trivia Quiz

Another quiz on the history, development, and other stuff that could be related to food and its production. Maybe a couple of beverage questions thrown in if I can think of any. And it's all in chronological order.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first true version of which item below evolved around 6000 B.C.E.?

Answer: pottery

The development of pottery brought pots, among other forms of cookery, which meant folks no longer had to boil their soup by dropping hot stones into the gourds, shells, and skin-lined pits they had been using. Herding dogs had been in use since at least 10000 B.C.E., primitive fish hooks (baited wooden toggles) since around 25000 B.C.E., and the ovens came after pottery, I think.
2. Aside from beans, what was the other, rarer, protein source in the diets of Athens' poor during Alexander the Great's day?

Answer: the occasional grasshopper

Yum. Around 325 B.C.E., other main staples were wild pears, beechnuts, barley paste, dried figs, turnips, and greens
3. What brought about the begin of the decline of England's domestic wine industry in 1154 C.E.?

Answer: cheap French wine

Eleanor of Aquitaine brought in the stuff herself, as the new wife of King Henry II.
4. The world's first coffee house opened where, in 1475?

Answer: Constantinople

It even had a name, Kiva Han. Ottoman Turks had introduced coffee to the city in 1453.
5. The Chinese introduced many foods to the West, but in the latter half of the 16th century, the West introduced many to the Chinese. Which of the following four foods was NOT one of those?

Answer: lemons

The others all came from the European "discovery" of the "New World" and finally made it East 52 years later.
6. Which staple of the German diet was first cultivated there in 1621?

Answer: potatoes

What else is there to say?
7. In 1735, the first case of what was recorded?

Answer: botulism

First recorded in the German states, the deadly strain's outbreak was traced to some tainted sausage.
8. In 1788, how many Americans were engaged in farming and food production?

Answer: 9 of 10

9. Which U.S. president installed the first cooking stove in the White House?

Answer: Millard Fillmore

It happened in 1850, and all the cooks quit in protest because they wanted to continue using the fireplace. President Fillmore got them to come back, though, when an expert from the U.S. Patent Office came and spent the day showing them how to regulate the heat with the dampers.
10. Even with the war on, in 1944, U.S. per capita consumption of what rose just over 10 pounds from the previous year?

Answer: meat

National income rose to $181 billion, allowing folks to eat 140 pounds of meat on average that year, up from 128.9 pounds the year before. A large proportion of that meat, though, is sold by organized crime through the black market.
