Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some parents have taught their children the "Musical Fruit" song to encourage them to eat this healthy type of food. Although not a fruit, what is the missing word from this song? "______, ______, the musical fruit The more you eat, the more you toot The more you toot, the better you feel So we have ______ at every meal!"

Answer: Beans

Why do beans cause humans to break wind? The reason is they contain a sugar called oligosaccharide which cannot be broken down by enzymes and absorbed through the body like other sugars. Instead, bacteria in the intestine reduce the oligosaccharides into gas. Another windy day in paradise!

2. One of my favourite winter time meals is a good helping of French Canadian baked beans. What ingredient, that is abundant in Quebec, is added to make these tasty legumes different to other varieties throughout the world?

Answer: Maple syrup

The beans used in the French Canadian recipe are all native to North America and were introduced to Italy in 1528 and to France by 1547. Though they are known as baked beans they are mostly stewed in a sauce. The farther south you go in the U.S.A. the tangier they get due to the addition of yellow mustard.

3. What is it in beer that leads to flatulence?

Answer: Sugars

Flatulence from beer is caused by the presence of complex sugars. While simple sugars are easily broken down and metabolized by either the yeast or yourself, the complex sugars persist within your lower intestine. There, they are fermented and consumed by bacteria and other gut flora, producing gas as a side effect.

4. Next a simple question on flatulence: Which class of person, on average, actually breaks wind the most often?

Answer: Vegetarians

The cellulose content in vegetables cannot easily be digested, consequently vegetarians are likely to produce more gas than people with a mixed diet.

There is no significant difference in the chemistry of the male and female digestive systems, therefore men and women discharge similar amounts of gas.

However, it's common knowledge that many men take greater delight when doing it.

5. For years this food, a member of the gourd family, has been used to cure various ailments. Its leaves and roots are used to treat diarrhea, and its stems are used to cure dysentery. When cooked in a soup, it prevents sore throats and laryngitis. Recently in China, its stems have been clinically shown to be effective in lowering blood pressure. Which of the following foods can honestly make these claims?

Answer: Cucumber

The humble cucumber and parts of its plant have been used for hundreds of years for various cures, especially in China. Today cucumbers are mostly eaten cooked in the East and raw in the West.

6. This naturally occurring sugar alcohol in its manufactured state is used as an artifical sweetener in a variety of products from chewing gum to cough syrup. What substance, if consumed in great amounts, can result in gas, cramps, and diarrhea?

Answer: Sorbitol

Sorbitol is not digested quickly by the human body. Undigested sorbitol in the small intestine can lead to the fermentation of bacteria which produces hydrogen gas creating the above-mentioned intestinal problems. Even sugar-free foods need to be consumed in moderate amounts.

7. Of the five main food groups, which is the most liable to cause severe flatulence?

Answer: Dairy Products

This is usually because a person is lactose intolerant, or that person's body is not up to par in breaking down lactose products. The biggest culprits in this regard are cheese, milk, cream, yoghurt and eggs. I read somewhere that if a person passed gas continually for six months, they'd create enough energy to power a nuclear device. A bit hard to believe really, mainly because if you passed gas continually for six months, you'd probably be dead before the first month elapsed. Although...when I think of my ex-husband, God bless him, this could very well be true. We ended up calling him Chernobyl.

8. Once voted the most hated vegetable in Britain, Brussels sprouts surely must be for life...not just Christmas! I love sprouts, but did you know how many calories are in a cupful of them? Not that I've ever 'drunk' a cupful!

Answer: 60

Yes...there are only 60 calories in a cupful of sprouts. Well worth including them in the diet! 1/2 cup contains 80% of the RDA of Vitamin C. That same cup also contains 669 IU of beta carotene.

9. There are a number of products on the market that can help minimise the amount of wind we produce. Which of the following remedies is most recommended?

Answer: Charcoal tablets

The most highly recommended anti-flatulence remedy comes in the form of charcoal tablets. When taken orally, these tablets absorb gaseous substances in the intestines that cause bloating and abdominal discomfort, thereby relieving flatulence. Charcoal tablets prevent toxin absorption whilst also enhancing the eradication of toxins.

Would the world be a better place if we all took these tablets on a regular basis? Probably not, why deprive us of one of life's simple pleasures! ;O)

10. I belong to the onion family Allium, though I am not an onion. I have been used for centuries by mankind for cooking and for medical treatments. I'm said to frighten away vampires as well. What am I?

Answer: Garlic

Garlic is used to give various foods a bite - and a smell which lingers on the breath for hours afterwards. Medicinally throughout time, garlic has been used in the treatment of breathing problems, in the treatment of tuberculosis and dropsy, as an energy booster, to treat smallpox, and as an aid for poor digestion. Today, it is said to help with heart disease, cholesterol problems, blood pressure problems, and even cancer. Garlic is quite a fascinating little gift from mother nature in fact, but for some people, it does present a small problem with the tail end of the human anatomy. Head for the hills if so!
