Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am the odd one out in my family as I was the one eating chicken and chips at the family party in the Indian Restaurant in Britain. My brother was tucking in to the hottest dish on the menu. Which of the following was it?

Answer: Chicken Phall

According to IndiaCurry.com, the Phall-Curry is the hottest served in British Restaurants. It contains Habanera or Naga Chili peppers and fresh ginger.

My local Indian take-away once made the mildest curry ever for me and laughed as they handed it over. They said that I would not be able to taste it. They were wrong and I was violently ill.
2. As soon as my brother told me that the goat stew recipe came from Morocco, I knew that I would be in trouble. Bearing in mind my brother's cast-iron stomach, which of the following was the reason that I could only watch in admiration?

Answer: It was highly spiced

Cumin, coriander, ginger, paprika, turmeric and chili powder is too much spice for me, but my brother loved it. I did try a Greek goat stew, which was flavoured with lemon, so much more to my taste.
3. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the next thing my brother decided to tuck into. Which of the following is a canned product from Thailand?

Answer: Bamboo Worms

This Thai delicacy is actually the caterpillar of the Bamboo Borer moth. If you do an online search you can find them for sale dried and bagged. My brother enjoyed his treat as I looked away.
4. My brother was looking forward to his next gourmet treat: canned platypus. Why was he disappointed when he opened the can?

Answer: It only contained a soft toy

There are no platypuses anywhere other than Australia, where they are a protected species. It has proved very difficult to rear them in captivity, but several programs are in place.
5. A friend brought an unusual canned treat back from America for my brother. Which of the following was he advised (on the can) to remove the bones from before eating?

Answer: Smoked rattlesnake

All of the above items are available, but the rattlesnake is the one that comes with the warning. The same friend had decided not to bring back canned Cajun Alligator as he thought there may be teeth in there instead.
6. Another American creation that I caught my brother eating straight from the jar had me intrigued. Which of the following was it? (HINT: It can also be used as a flavouring, topping and in baking)

Answer: Powdered peanut butter

Powdered peanut butter has a much lower fat content and is more versatile, so my brother told me. It can be used in cake and cookie recipes and as a topping. It can also be eaten straight from the jar.
7. My brother is so mean. He knows that I love chocolate and he went and spoiled it for me. What recent trend in chocolate dipped items was he eating? (NOT the one from Philadelphia)

Answer: Chilies

When I was researching my "All You Need Is Chocolate" quiz, I discovered that the original hot chocolate drink was a served cold and flavoured with vanilla, chili pepper and other spices in South America. In Europe, the chili was removed and sugar was added. This trend for combining chocolate and chilies seems a backwards step to me.

The Philadelphia trend is chocolate dipped onions.
8. Next on my brother's culinary journey was the national dish of South Africa. What is its name?

Answer: Bobotie

The BBC Good Food site describes Bobotie as a mixture of curried meat and fruit with a creamy golden topping. He enjoyed it and I looked on aghast.
9. When my brother told me about the tea that he drank when he was on holiday I was not impressed. Which country adds milk and butter from the yak to black tea?

Answer: Tibet

Apparently it is an acquired taste. If one thinks of it as a soup rather than tea, it is supposed to be more palatable. I will stick to my instant coffee.
10. I thought that my brother had taken a turn for the better when I heard what he was eating next, until I found out what they really were. When I tell you that he was eating Rocky Mountain oysters, what was it?

Answer: Bull calf testicles

Wikipedia describes this as a dish made possible as a bi-product of the necessary veterinary act. Although Rocky Mountain oysters are readily available in the Americas, they are considered more of a novelty dish. In Canada they are called prairie oysters and in Spanish speaking countries, criadillas.
