Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When your sink is suffering a clog, pouring which combination down the drain can solve the problem?

Answer: baking soda and vinegar

Pour one half cup of baking soda and one cup of vinegar directly into the drain. You can increase the amounts just be sure the ratio is always one-part baking soda to two parts vinegar. After the mixture fizzes and bubbles flush the drain with very hot water for five minutes, then cold water.
2. Coating your bathroom mirror with _____ _____ can keep it "fog free".

Answer: shaving cream

Shave before your shower, lather the mirror with shaving cream and wipe it clean with a towel. Your mirror will be fog free for a few weeks.
3. Is your microwave suffering from an internal food explosion? Which powerful team can restore its health?

Answer: water and lemon

Pour a half cup of water in a microwave safe bowl. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice of both halves into the bowl then toss them in too. Microwave on high for three minutes or until the water begins to boil. Without opening the door let stand for five minutes.

After carefully removing the bowl (and turntable if applicable), wipe with a paper towel, starting with the ceiling and sides.
4. Did your chewing gum lose its flavor on the carpet overnight? Which spray can alleviate the sticky situation?

Answer: WD-40

Spray some WD-40 directly on the gum and gently rub off with a cloth
or a toothbrush. Including a "for cleaning use only" toothbrush is a must for cleaning aids.
5. Which "miracle product", usually found near the clothes dryer, can be used to dust away a multitude of messes?

Answer: dryer sheets

You don't need that old feather duster anymore! The static absorbing qualities of dryer sheets make them great for lifting dust off appliances, blinds, shelves, baseboards etc. You can even recycle used ones as long as there isn't too much lint or loose threads attached.
6. Which inexpensive sandwich wrap can be used to polish fixtures and faucets?

Answer: wax paper

The texture of wax paper helps scrub away any fingerprints and/or hard water stains. The slight wax residue acts as a repellant which means that fixtures stay cleaner longer and that's a plus!
7. Does your mattress have a case of "The Doggie Blues"? Freshen it up with a sprinkle of ______ ____.(NaHCO3)

Answer: baking soda

Sprinkle baking soda on the mattress and leave for about an hour, just about the same amout of time it takes to wash the sheets. Use the upholstery attachment and thoroughly vacuum. Baking soda is great for absorbing and deodorizing so Fido can enjoy more quality time on your bed!
8. No need to maneuver a bulky vacuum to clean dusty lampshades when a ___ roller does the trick.

Answer: lint

Your lint roller isn't just for pet hair removal. Since lampshades come in various shapes and sizes, a lint roller is the perfect tool to clean inside and outside easily.
9. "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!" Substitute ________ for paper towels or cloths when window washing.

Answer: newspaper

The newspaper ink acts as an abrasive but won't scratch the glass. Take care not to touch the vinyl surfaces around your windows with the wet newspaper because the ink can come off and stain. A solution of white vinegar and water instead of costly window cleaner works perfectly. If your windows are very dirty, add just a drop of dishwashing liquid. To avoid streaking, wash your windows on a cloudy day. Direct sunlight heats the windowpanes causing the liquid to dry too fast leaving streaks.
10. If your treasured cast iron frying pan is suffering from a bacon, egg and cheese hangover which combination can get in back on track?

Answer: salt and potato

Sprinkle a generous amount of coarse salt into the pan and use one half of the potato as a "scouring pad". Once it's clean rinse and pat dry.

If your pan becomes dull, gray or rusty it probably needs to be "seasoned". Preheat your oven to 400F (205C). Spread a tiny bit of oil completely around the sides, bottom and outside of the pan with a paper towel. "Bake it" for an hour and let it cool in the oven. Wipe it once more and you're ready for your next culinary masterpiece.
