Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you scored "two for his heels" in this game you'd be quite happy.

Answer: Cribbage

2 points scored by the dealer when a jack is cut after the deal and before the start of play.
Invented in the 17th century cribbage is usually played by two individuals or as a partnership between four. Scoring is kept on a board with coloured pegs, the object being to attain a score of 61 or 121 points in the case of an extended game. The winner(s) is/are the first to reach the total points required which is known as "pegging out". Probably where the euphemistic term for dying originated.
2. Where might you come across a " royal marriage" ?

Answer: Bezique

Invented in the early 19th century in Sweden, played with two decks of 32 cards, comprising 7's to Aces. Bezique was a forerunner of Pinochle which is today more popular.
A "marriage" is a pairing of a King and a Queen, or if the two cards are in the same suite they become a "Royal Marriage"
3. Playing which game where might you try "Shooting the Moon" ?

Answer: Hearts

By taking all the 13 hearts and the queen of spades. If successful, it gives
26 points to all opponents in the game where the objective is to score as low as possible.
4. In which game can you get a "Schneider" ?

Answer: Sheepshead

A "schneider" is the term used when a player and his/her partner take tricks to the value of 91 points or more of the 120 available in a round. And even better than a "schneider" is a "schwartz"!

Sheepshead is another whist type game that originated in Middle Europe, played by anything between two and eight people. As in Bezique only the 7's to Aces are used.
5. What would you be playing if you were engaged in "snowballing" ?

Answer: Faro

Placing many bets covering most or all of the places on the 13 card layout.

The gambling game Faro, a derivation of the Egyptian Pharaoh, is presumed to have originated in France in the early 18th century. When it surfaced in America it was hugely popular and became renowned as the King of gambling games in the old West. Poker was almost non-existent in the saloons and bars.
Faro features prominently in the 1993 films "Tombstone" and 1994 "Wyatt Earp"
6. Playing what might you "stick the dealer" ?

Answer: Euchre

An optional rule requiring the dealer to name a trump suit when none of the other players have done so.
Euchre is a "short-deck" type whist game using, nowadays, 24 cards instead of 32 as was the case when the game was first invented by the Pennsylvania Dutch in the 1800's
7. While playing which of these might you be offered "insurance" ?

Answer: Blackjack

An optional side bet allowing a player, for half his/her original bet to insure against the dealer having a Blackjack when exposing the second card with his/her face up Ace.
Blackjack is by far the most popular of card gambling games in North American casinos.
8. Playing which game might you be holding a "Yarborough" ?

Answer: Bridge

A hand containing no card above a nine. Named after the second earl of Yarborough who was a devotee of the game.
Bridge is an immensely popular game played by four persons in 2 partnerships
with bids made by players announcing the number of tricks they expect to take.
9. Playing which game might you be found "sandbagging"?

Answer: Spades

Understating the value of your hand.
Mostly played in the USA where it was invented, Spades is another whist-type game with teams of two-player partnerships playing to reach a 500 point winning score.
10. Finally,if an opponent calls you "Muggins" playing what game have you made an error?

Answer: Cribbage

Unfortunately, you haven't counted the full point value of the cards in your hand.
If spotted by an opponent, they will call "Muggins" and the missed points will be added to their score. An optional rule.
