Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We are off to Camberwell market, a great antique and collectibles market in Melbourne, Australia. We are looking for some brown pottery from the oldest continuous pottery factory in Australia. Which one?

Answer: Bendigo Pottery

Bendigo Pottery, located in Epsom, near Bendigo, is the oldest continuous pottery maker in Australia. Bendigo Pottery is known for their distinctive dark brown glazed pottery made in wood-fired kilns. In recent years, Bendigo Pottery made a range of ceramics from plates, bowls, jars including various items decorated with an Australian theme using images such as gum leaves, gum nuts, indigenous plants and of course, native animals.
2. Wow I cannot believe it, I was shopping in Vinnie's, and found an original painting by Albert Namatjira. This is unbelievable as it is worth a fortune and I only paid $10. What type of painting is Namatjira known for?

Answer: Landscape

Albert Namatjira was an Aboriginal landscape artist from the Northern Territory who lived near Alice Springs. Namatjira was well known for painting water colours of vivid colours of the Australian outback, landscapes depicting scenes of starkness, native trees and the desert, with an ability of showing the beauty of it.
3. Now I am on a mission, therefore I will scour all the Australian antique shops where hopefully I will find some of those gorgeous ceramic plates, you know the ones, with delightful portraits of Aboriginal children on them. I just cannot remember the artist, can you?

Answer: Brownie Downing

Violet Downing, known to everyone as Brownie, was a prolific artist using various mediums for her work, including ceramics such as plates, cups and saucers, tea sets and wall plaques. The most popular items of her artwork were depictions of Aboriginal children. Brownie was also known for writing children's books, her first book was "Tinka and His Friends", again about an Aboriginal boy. Today a lot of Brownie's work would not be considered politically correct but are still highly collectible.
4. Now I have to have it, a first edition of "My Brilliant Career". I am on the hunt for all the rare and first edition bookshops throughout Melbourne. I have forgotten who wrote it. Which of these is the author?

Answer: Miles Franklin

"My Brilliant Career" was written by Miles Franklin and published in 1901. Considered an Australian classic, this book has enjoyed a long shelf life with a film being produced in 1979. The story is a sad one with the "brilliant career" being able to write and publish a book.

When a book was published the author would not have to marry or do the expectations of those times for a woman which would lead to a happy life. The book covers topics from the hardship of living with drought, drunkenness, debt, hard work, as well as struggling with not achieving one's dreams.
5. Well all this Australian collecting has given me the chance to go to Tasmania for some rare pine wood, though to be blunt it is not really a pine. What wood is it?

Answer: Huon

It is called Huon Pine but actually this tree is a conifer. It is a rare plant only found in the southwest Tasmania. Huon Pine is a protected tree where its wood is also protected therefore it is illegal to cut down or interfere in any way with any living Huon Pine tree. Huon Pine wood is only available from previously harvested wood making it a limited resource which in turn has made it a very desirable and rare wood.
6. Remembering the 1960s in Australia, who could forget fashion guru, Prue Acton? To which of these fields did Prue turn her artistic talent?

Answer: Painting

Prue Acton was an extremely successful fashion designer in the 1960s and 1970s. Prue was the first Australian designer to exhibit in New York. Prue extended her range of fashion into makeup where I remember vividly having a yellow compact. Since the 1980s Prue has been following her first love which is painting and has been very successful with her endeavours.
7. I know or I think I know I am on a wild goose chase, as I am looking for a glass maker master, John Radecki. Why can't I find any of his works in the junk shops?

Answer: He created stain glass for churches

John Radecki was originally from Poland and came to Australia in the 1880s where he continued to work as a master glass artist. Radecki specialised in stain glass windows and specialised in religious subjects making him in demand from many churches in the Sydney area.
8. There are a lot of useless items that people collect, but to me toast racks must be the most useless. Who wants cold toast! Is there such a thing as toast rack collecting?

Answer: Yes

Toast racks are collected in a number of ways, just for the sake of it being a toast rack, souvenir toast racks for example Sydney and Melbourne trams, silver or stainless steel, porcelain, quirky or by a specific maker. To me it is just something that is a totally useless item that has no value, and of course I would be considered wrong by those fanatic collectors.
9. Having a great LP collection, I am seeking an album from a singer of the 1970s. The album is titled about something regarding a yellow road. What am I seeking?

Answer: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

A great album was "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John. It is a double album with classics including "Bennie and the Jets", "Candle in the Wind" and "Roy Rogers" to name but a few. Of course the album's title refers to the movie "The Wizard of Oz", not only with the album name but also the album's cover design.
10. Finally I have found a collectable with a great name, "tegestology". This is something that has appealed to my husband and me. What am I collecting?

Answer: Beer Coasters

Tegestology is the collecting of paper beer coasters. What a great hobby it is where one has to go from pub to pub, enjoy a drink and collect the beer coasters. Beers coasters started as a way to advertise the different breweries and now has turned into a hobby for collectors all over the world.
