Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I'm having breakfast and I'm missing a food that usually comes with bacon, what am I missing?

Answer: Eggs

Bacon and eggs are the ideal low-carb meal, however it is a meal that tends to be high in fat and salt - which works perfectly if you've switched to a Keto way of eating! Of course eating bacon and eggs every day can get boring so why not switch it up a bit - bacon can be grilled, fried or oven baked. Eggs can be fried, poached, coddled, boiled, scrambled, hard, soft, medium, the list goes on....

All hail the person who decided that the perfect accompaniment for their slab of salted pig was inside the shell that was laid by a chicken.
2. I want to cook Italian food and I'm missing something one of the most important ingredients. Which red, glossy-skinned fruit from the nightshade family am I missing?

Answer: Tomato

Tomatoes are in many Italian dishes - both hot and cold. From salads and bruschetta, to pizza and pasta. Tomatoes are very versatile and can be eaten raw or cooked. When processed they are the base of many sauces, and can be kept for months (in the correct conditions) to develop flavour, or just to use when you've run out of tomatoes to make a fresh sauce.
3. I want to make a banana split but there's something missing. I have bananas, cream, nuts and syrup but there's something yummy and frozen that I need to add. What's missing?

Answer: Ice cream

The basis of any good banana split is ice cream. A banana is split length-ways and laid open in a dish. Several scoops of ice cream are placed on top of the banana, then use whatever toppings you like - a traditional topping includes whipped cream, crushed nuts, chocolate sauce and maraschino cherries.
4. It's lunch time and I feel like a modern club sandwich. I think I'm missing something though because it just doesn't look big enough. I already have two slices of bread, chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo. But what's missing?

Answer: Another piece of bread

A club sandwich is traditionally toasted, cut into halves or quarters, and held together with cocktail sticks. A modern club sandwich looks almost like two sandwiches stuck together - make your usual sandwich, then put another sandwich on top, just use the top of the bottom sandwich as the bottom of the top sandwich! A club sandwich will usually include chicken or bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo - of course there are variations on this, but these would be considered "traditional" club sandwich fillers.
5. If I want to make sushi, what is the most important ingredient that can definitely not be missing?

Answer: Rice

The principal ingredient of sushi is vinegared rice, usually prepared with sugar and salt. Sushi rice is usually medium grain white rice, however short grain or brown rice can also be used. Many forms of sushi include seafood, however there are also versions that include vegetables or fruits. Sushi is often accompanied by pickled ginger, wasabi and soy sauce.
6. Which fruit is missing from the following list: peach, lychee, nectarine, mango, cherry?

Answer: Plum

All the fruits in the question, along with "plum", are stone fruits. That is, they are fruits with a single stone inside them. The stone is called a "pit", and the seed for the fruit is within the stone. These types of fruits are also called "drupe".
7. Australians love a "Hawaiian" pizza - or do they? One of the most controversial pizza toppings can definitely NOT be missing from MY pizza. What is this sweet food item?

Answer: Pineapple

Does pineapple belong on a pizza or in a burger? Should pineapple be cooked? According to me, yes! But according to many others it's a big, fat "no". Sam Panopoulos (a Greek-Canadian) claimed to create the first Hawaiian pizza in Ontario, Canada in 1962. According to research cited by Wikipedia, Hawaiian pizza is one of the most popular in Australia and one of the most common in the UK.

However according to a US study, most adults listed pineapple as one of their least favourite pizza toppings.
8. Curries are scaled from mild to hot and this list is missing the hottest curry: Korma, Biryani, Tikka Masala, Madras, _________. Which curry is missing?

Answer: Vindaloo

This isn't an exhaustive list of curry dishes by any means. Curry is made in many different countries and regions, and comes in many different forms and scales of hotness. Typically, Korma is one of the mildest curries, with Dentons.net listing it as a one out of five on the "heat-ometer". Vindaloo and Jalfrezi are listed at the top of the listing with a five out of five on the hotness scale. Pasadana, Dhansak and Rogan Josh all rate at three out of five.
9. There are five "Mother sauces" of French cuisine - Bechamel, Hollandaise, Tomato and Veloute are four from this list. Which "Mother sauce" is missing?

Answer: Espagnole

The five "Mother sauces" are considered as such because they are used as a base to many other dishes and sauces and should be known by heart by all culinary students. Hollandaise is the only sauce not thickened by a roux, instead being thickened by an emulsion of egg yolk and melted butter. Espagnole is a brown sauce, Veloute is a light sauce used for serving with delicately cooked meats, whereas Bechamel is heavier and used with pasta, cheese, or bakes.
10. If I were breaking my fast, which meal would I have missed?

Answer: I didn't miss any meals

Eating breakfast, or "breaking one's fast", is typically the first meal of the day. It refers to breaking the overnight fasting period (basically, when you're asleep). Prior to the mid-thirteenth century, the first meal of the day was dinner, which in Old English means "to break a fast".

It wasn't until after this time that "breakfast" came into use and "dinner" was moved to the end of the day.
