Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is it possible to win a NASPA (North American) Scrabble Tournament if you lose every game?

Answer: Yes

This sounds very odd, but is true! Some tournaments use the credit system for scoring games. One of these tournaments gave the winner three credits up front, and the loser one credit. The tournament also gives you credits for how many points you score. You would receive one credit for every 50 points you score.

The winner would also receive one credit for every 50 points s/he beats the loser by. If all of your games are close losses with high scores, (500-501, I've seen higher!) and all of the other games are close games with low scores, you might end up winning the tournament! This is because your opponents will have accumulated very few points by winning by small amounts, and because you will play a different opponent every time.
2. You can win in Bridge. Which of these objectives is the most accurate one you should set if you want to win a Rubber Bridge match?

Answer: Have the most points after one team wins two games

Interestingly, Bridge is not primarily about winning the two games. If you win two games, you win the rubber. The rubber awards 700 points if your opponents have no victories, and 500 if your opponents have one. If your opponents score more points than you, they win even if you have the rubber.
3. Winning in Chess can be hard if you're playing a grandmaster. Which one of these is never a way to win at Chess?

Answer: Stalemating the opponent

Stalemate is when one player has no legal moves, but is not in check. This is considered a draw, and can be a good idea to try to succumb to if you are losing. Checkmate is when one player is in check and cannot get out of it. A strong mating attack can sometimes save a lost position. Your opponent can resign and give you the point if they like. Also, in a timed game, if your opponent is out of time, you win unless you could not checkmate with the army you have left. Most grandmaster games end in a resignation or an agreed draw.

A position that ends in a draw very quickly even though both sides have winning chances is called a grandmaster draw.
4. Spades is a team game, so one team wins. What is the set number of points usually required to win?

Answer: 500

Though it can be anything, it normally is 500. Spades is a two person per team, two team game. Players bid on how many tricks they think they can get. There is an incentive for bidding as high as you can possibly earn, as players only earn one point for each overtrick, but ten for the other tricks earned. If a team accumulates ten overtricks, they also lose 100 points. Tricks also roll over to your partner, so if you overbid two, and your partner underbid two, you are okay. Any tricks under the bid amount incur a penalty equal to the number of points you would have earned if your bid had been successful. Players can also bid nil, which means you MUST earn no tricks.

A successful nil is 100 points, while an unsuccessful one is -100 points. A player can also bid double nil, which is like the aforementioned, but with double stakes and without looking at your hand.
5. Backgammon can be luck based, but someone usually wins a completed game. Do you win when all of your pieces reach home?

Answer: Yes

Backgammon features your pieces scattered around your board. The object of the game is to get your pieces back to home. Each turn, you roll dice to see how many spaces you advance (closer to home) on that turn. You must get all of your pieces in the quadrant nearest to your home before you move ANY pieces home. The first player then to get every piece home wins!
6. Who won the Australian Rock Paper Scissors championship in 2010? His nickname is "Fists of Fury".

Answer: Peter Matthews

Peter Matthews is supposedly an aggressive player. He resides in Canberra. He is right handed.
7. What is the best possible hand in poker variants without wild cards?

Answer: Royal Flush

A royal flush is when you have the ace, king, queen, jack, and ten of the same suit. The odds of getting a royal flush in hearts dealt to you in a 5 card draw hand is 1/2,598,960. It is the rarest and thus the highest valued hand type.
8. Blackjack is a fun casino game, but it can easily be played at home. What are you trying to have the sum of your cards total?

Answer: 21

If you get dealt an ace and a card from ten through king, you get a Blackjack. In a humorous scene from The Simpsons, Homer purposely busts (draws over 21) himself every time and players win over $250,000. When his shift is over, all of the players leave.
9. If both players play checkers perfectly, what is the result?

Answer: Draw

This took 200 personal computers to prove. Checkers playing software which never loses has been written because of this.
10. How many ships do you have to sink to win the standard variant of Battleship on a 10x10 grid?

Answer: Five

Battleship is played by calling out coordinates. When a coordinate is a hit, a player gets a pretty good idea as to where a ship is. Once all five ships are sunk by a player, that player wins.
