Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first thing you'll be asked is what you'd like to drink. You are familiar with beers, soft drinks and wines, but a few things you've never heard of. Which of the following drinks is suitable for children?

Answer: Spezi

All these are mixed drinks. Spezi (coke and orangeade), Radler (beer and lemonade) and Russ'n (wheat beer and lemonade) are very refreshing while Goaß'n is a very strong drink containing dark beer, coke and brandy, usually served with a straw.
Legal drinking age in Germany is 16 for beer/wine and 18 for spirits.
2. Having heard of the famous Weißwurst (white sausage), you consider to give it a try. There is only one way to eat a Weißwurst correctly.

Answer: remove the skin and cut the sausage in pieces

All other methodes are considered bad manners. Weißwurst is usually ordered per piece and in odd numbers (3 is most common) and will normally not be served after 12:00 pm.
3. On to the soup. Hochzeitssuppe (wedding soup) sounds promising. You'll get a rich soup with many ingredients, but not:

Answer: strips of salmon

Tradition says that there have to be at least three ingredients in a Hochzeitssuppe, altough recipes will vary by region. Other possibilities are liver dumplings, noodles, asparagus, semolina dumplings etc.
4. The next section of the menu is "Brotzeit" (literally "time for a bread"). This is a small snack taken between regular meals. The first one is easy: Leberkäs. According to your dictionary this should be some weird cheese with liver. True or false?

Answer: False

Fortunately, there is no trace of cheese or liver in a Leberkäs. It's a kind of pork sausage in the form of a loaf. It may be served cold with bread and mustard or hot with potato salad.
5. The next one is quite obscure: Obazda. This is a popular food in Munich's beer gardens, but mostly unknown outside of Bavaria. What could this be?

Answer: a dairy product

Obazda is cheese (Camembert and Limburger) blended with onions, peppers and spice, served with bread or pretzels. Goes well with beer. The word Obazda means mashed/blended.
6. Another favorite is Wurstsalat, a salad made of slices of sausage and onions in a light vinegar dressing. True or false: the original "Münchner Wurstsalat" contains cheese?

Answer: False

Just sausage and onions. If you add cheese, it will be "Schweizer Wurstsalat".
7. Now on to the main courses. Fleischpflanzerl is the Bavarian name for a dish that looks mostly like:

Answer: a hamburger

Outside Bavaria this is know as Frikadelle or Bulette: a meat patty. May be served with a wide variety of side orders.
8. Vegetarian? Than this may be your choice: Rahmschwammerl. Rahm means cream, so far, so good. But what could Schwammerl be?

Answer: mushrooms

Although the Bavarian word "Schwammerl" could mean every kind of fungi, this dish will almost always be made of chanterelles.
9. Another very traditional thing is Tellerfleisch ("plate meat"). No trick this time, it is really meat and is actually served on a plate. But what kind of meat are you looking forward to?

Answer: beef

Tellerfleisch is cooked beef served with horseradish and potatos. It's
truly not everyone's taste.
10. A good meal should be ended with a delicious dessert. The thing most unidentifiable on the menu is Kaiserschmarrn. Coffee is good company for this. It will almost always be served with:

Answer: apple and/or vanilla sauce

Kaiserschmarrn is a thick pancake with raisins, separated in small pieces and frosted with cinnamon sugar. Beware: it is very saturating and sometimes considered as a whole meal.
Fun fact: Schmarrn is also a mild swearword meaning "rubbish".
