Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What aromatic, antibacterial agent did the ancient Egyptians use to embalm their mummies?

Answer: Cedar oil

Cedar oil has a warm woody fragrance and has a calming and balancing effect. It is said to help promote spirituality. Cedar oil is also an effective antibacterial agent and well as an insect repellent and has been known to repel fleas, tick and mosquitoes.
2. In the Bible, the wise men brought the infant Jesus gold, frankincense, and what other aromatic resin?

Answer: Myrrh

Myrrh is an aromatic gum resin which oozes from cuts to the bark of a Commiphora tree. The resin then hardens into tear-shaped droplets which is then powdered or steamed into ointments or perfumes. Because myrrh was used in the embalming or anointing of the dead, it came to represent Christ's mortality, suffering, and sorrow.
3. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse is considered the father of modern aromatherapy. To relieve his burned hand while working in his laboratory, he plunged it into the nearest cold liquid. He was so impressed with the result that he resolved to investigate the healing powers of other essential oils. Which oil did he plunge his hand in?

Answer: Lavender Oil

Lavender is casually known as "nature's first aid kit". Once considered essential to the medicine chest in every home, it does appear to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsive, and anti-depressant properties.
4. Essential oils are not really oils. They are essences that give plants their characteristic smell. Which is NOT a method for extracting essential oils?

Answer: Filtration

Distillation converts the volatile oils into a vapor and then condenses the vapor back into a liquid.
Expression, also referred to as "cold pressed" method, is a method where oil is obtained by using high mechanical pressure to literally squeeze the oil from the plant material.
Solvent extraction uses solvents (usually hexane) to coax the essential oils out of the plant material.
5. This herb's name, derived from rosmarinus, is mentioned in a famous line by Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet: "..for remembrance; pray, love, remember". What plant is she referring to?

Answer: Rosemary

Fascinating recent research may scientifically verify a connection between rosemary and remembrance. Several studies evaluating aromatherapy suggest that the herb actually stimulates memory and may preserve some cognitive function.
6. The oil from this tree is often used in many over-the-counter cough and cold medication, as it is an effective decongestant and expectorant.

Answer: Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus oil is also vastly used in creams and ointments to relieve muscle and joint pain. It can be found in many mouthwashes. Teas made of eucalyptus leaves were also used to reduce fevers and headaches.
7. A carrier oil is any vegetable oil that dilutes pure essential oils for safe application on the skin. Which of the following carrier oils should be used with caution?

Answer: Peanut oil

Though most highly refined peanut oils remove the peanut allergens, peanut oils that are cold pressed may not have the allergens removed. This could be highly dangerous to people with peanut allergies.
8. Essential oils should always be stored in dark glass bottles.

Answer: True

Exposure to ultraviolet rays, oxygen, and heat will break the oils down and they can become very irritating to the skin. Essential oils should not be in plastic bottles, as the oil will eat into the container and gradually melt the plastic.
9. Rose essential oil is one of the most precious essential oils. How much rose petals are required to produce one pound of rose oil?

Answer: 5000 pounds

Rose oil is extremely expensive because it takes roughly 5,000 pounds of rose petals (as much as 10,000 pounds of roses) to produce one pound of rose oil. The Damask Rose, a deep pink rose with few petals, is one of the prefered types of roses used for making rose essential oil.
10. Essential oils can be classified by their "notes", similar to a musical scale. How are the notes classified?

Answer: Top, middle, base

A Frenchman called Septimus Piesse classified the odors of essential oils in the 19th century according to musical scales: top, middle and base notes. The base notes are rich, heavy scents that linger long after you take a whiff (e.g. sandalwood, ginger).

The middle note is the scent that unfolds after you apply the scent (e.g. lavender, rosemary), and the high notes are the light aspects of the fragrance that are noticed immediately (e.g. lemon, peppermint). To create a balanced perfume, a combination of all three notes will give the best results.
