Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. SCUBA stands for "self contained underwater breathing apparatus"

Answer: True

SCUBA was invented by Jacques Cousteau and revolutionized diving.
2. Jacques Cousteau was the first diver.

Answer: False

While Cousteau invented the first SCUBA unit which he named the Aqua Lung, civilizations have been trying different diving techniques for centuries such as using hollowed out reeds as a snorkel or wooden barrels as primitive diving bells.
3. What should you never do while SCUBA diving?

Answer: hold your breath

One of the most important rules (if not the most important rule) in SCUBA diving is to NEVER hold your breath. Taking out your regulator and taking off your mask are techniques actually required to become certified and swimming upside down can just be fun underwater :)
4. What part of your regulator delivers breathable air to a diver?

Answer: 2nd Stage

The 1st stage of your regulator attaches directly to your tank and reduces the pressurized air to a level that can be transferred to the 2nd stage. The 2nd stage is located directly off of the mouth piece and further reduces the air pressure to an amount that is breathable by the diver.
5. What are the two most common Nitrox mixes for SCUBA divers?

Answer: EAN32 and EAN36

Nitrox is a mixed gas that has larger %'s of oxygen then regular air. Regular air is comprised of 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen and 1% other gases. The numbers following "EAN" are the oxygen %'s of the gas. By increasing the oxygen percentage in the gas, you decrease the amount of nitrogen being absorbed by the body and thus increasing your max bottom time before having to decompress.

The negative is that it limits your maximum depth because the oxygen will become toxic sooner.
6. What is the most popular SCUBA diving destination in the United States?

Answer: Florida Keys

While all of these others locations offer some great and unique diving experiences, the Florida Keys still reign supreme as the most popular SCUBA destination in the United States.
7. What is it called when someone steps into the water off of a boat or dock while placing one hand over their weight belt buckle and the other over their face mask?

Answer: Giant Stride

A giant stride is the best way to get in the water in most situations, but I must say that I prefer to do a back roll off the side as you don't have to maneuver around much in your gear.
8. When doing multiple dives in a short period of time, what is the most important reason that you plan an appropriate amount of time for your surface interval?

Answer: So your body has enough time to off gas

While it is important to be rested and sure you are not injured, the most important reason to have a surface interval is to allow the built up Nitrogen in your system to dissipate sufficiently enough to reduce the need to decompress on your next dive.
9. What is the maximum recommended depth an open water certified diver should dive to?

Answer: 60 ft / 18m

It is recommended that you only dive to a maximum depth of 60ft.
10. Generally, how long should you wait to fly after your last dive?

Answer: 24 hours

While this issue is debated by some, it is standard practice to wait a full 24 hours after your last dive before you fly to ensure no complications with built up Nitrogen in your system.
