Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While playing Scrabble, my opponent uses the word "rose." I counter with the word "knife." I add the letters "knif" onto the "e" in "rose" to form my word. The "K" landed on a triple letter score. What is the value of the word?

Answer: Twenty-Two

K = 5
N = 1
I = 1
F = 4
E = 1

Since the K is on a triple letter square, multiply it by three. 5x3 = 15.
Add up the other letters. 1+1+4+1 = 7

15 + 7 = 22

The value of the word knife is 22 points.
2. Not counting A, E, I, O, and U (the vowels), how many tiles are there in the game of Scrabble?

Answer: Fifty-Eight

A = 9 tiles.
E = 12 tiles.
I = 9 tiles.
O = 8 tiles.
U = 4 tiles.

9+12+9+8+4+= 42

Including the blank tiles there are 100 tiles in the game altogether. Subtract 42 from 100 and you have the remaining tiles.

100-42 = 58
3. How many letters have two tiles? ***Blanks NOT included***

Answer: Nine

Nine letters in Scrabble have two tiles.

Those tiles are B, C, F, H, M, P, V, W, and Y.
4. What five letters are worth four points?

Answer: F, H, V, W, and Y

F, H, V, W, and Y are all worth four points and they also all only have two tiles.
5. While playing Scrabble, my opponent played the word "goal". I used the word "coach." I place my word on the board so that the "o" in "goal" is the "o" in my new word. The first "C" lands on a triple word score. The second "C" lands on a double letter score. I use a blank tile to represent the letter "H." What is the value of the word?

Answer: Thirty-Three

C = 3 points.
O = 1 point.
A = 1 point.
C = 3 points.
H = 0 points because it is a blank tile.

The second "C" is on a double letter score, therefore multiply 3x2 = 6.
Add the value of "O" and "A" to 6. 6+2 = 8.
Add the other "C" to 8 = 11.
Since the H is a blank, it has NO value.
Multiply 11x3 because the first "C" landed on a triple word score.

The word is worth 33 points.
6. How many letters have four tiles?

Answer: Four

The letters D, L, S, and U all have four tiles.

D is worth two points, while S, L, and U are all worth one point.
7. The player before you uses the word "book." You counter by adding an "S" onto the end of the word "book". You add onto the "S" and create the word "slice." The "B" is on a double word score. Both the "S" and the "E" land on triple letter squares. How many points should you get for your turn?

Answer: Twenty- Four

During this turn you have created two words, books and slice.
B = 3 points.
O = 1 point.
O = 1 point.
K = 5 points.
S = 1 point.
L = 1 point.
I = 1 point.
C = 3 points.
E = 1 point.

The word "books" is worth 13 points. The word "S" is worth three points because it is on a triple letter square. The "B" being on a double word score does not factor into your score. The double word score can only be factored into the score one time, and that one time occurred when the other player first put the letter down the word "book"

The word slice is worth 11 points. The letters "S" and "E" are both worth three points because they were on triple letter squares. The other letters are worth five points.

6+5 = 11

Add the two together and you have the total value of your turn.

13+11= 24 points.
8. The word "lawyer" is worth 13 points.

Answer: False

L = 1 point.
A = 1 point.
W = 4 points.
Y = 4 points.
E = 1 point.
R = 1 point.

1+1+4+4+1+1 = 12

The word lawyer is worth 12 points, not 13 points.
9. The word "qaid" is an acceptable word to use in Scrabble.

Answer: True

The word "qaid" is defined as a Muslim tribal chief, judge, or senior official.

"Qaid" can also be spelled "caid" and "kaid."
10. Which two letters are worth two points?

Answer: D & G

The letters D and G are both worth two points.

The letter D has four tiles, while G has three tiles.
