Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In how many American homes can a Scrabble game be found?

Answer: one out of three

Scrabble is found in one of three American homes, making it a very common sight in the games closet. Did you know that William Macy was on vacation one day, and when he found out about Scrabble, he ordered that it was to be put into his stores. Within a year after Macy's order for the game to be put in his stores, Scrabble was a "must have".

There have been over 175 Scrabble tournaments and over two hundred Scrabble clubs in the U.S. alone. There is even a National Scrabble Association!
2. In what year was Scrabble released for the first time?

Answer: 1948

Scrabble was invented by a man named Alfred Mosher Butts. He had the idea to create something that crossed vocabulary words, crosswords and anagrams together. Scrabble was born!
3. Where was the first Scrabble factory located?

Answer: Dodgington, Connecticut

The first Scrabble factory was in fact an abandoned schoolhouse in Dodgington, Connecticut. Amazingly, back in the first days of Scrabble, they managed to play twelve games an hour where as these days, it takes an hour on average to play a game.
4. In the game of Scrabble, what is the value of the letter "J"?

Answer: eight points

Butts had studied the dictionary to determine the amount of points each letter would be worth. The vowels are worth one point, all of them besides "Y", which is four points. The more rare the letter is found in the dictionary, the more points it was worth.
5. You get forty bonus points if you use all your letters in one turn.

Answer: False

You actually do get a bonus for using all your letters in one word. You don't get forty points, you get fifty points. It is a way of rewarding players for using their creativity in finding new words.
6. When a square is coloured dark red, what does it mean?

Answer: Triple word score

There are eight "triple word score" squares on the Scrabble board. For example, if your word was "E-E-L" and one of your letters was on the red space, you would multiply the total word score by three. The word" E-E-L " is worth three points and it would add up to nine, due to the triple word score.
7. How many squares are there on a Scrabble board?

Answer: 225

You may have noticed that all the bonus squares (such as the ones with the triple word scores) are in diagonal, with a few exceptions of course (triple word scores).
8. Does a blank letter have any value?

Answer: No

A blank letter is worth no points but however may be used for any letter of the alphabet. Your letter must be stated to your opponents. There are two blank tiles in a game of Scrabble, making them fairly rare.
9. According to the popular toy brand, "Hasbro", at what age do they recommend children start playing original Scrabble?

Answer: 8

"Hasbro" recommends that any child under 8 should play Junior Scrabble, which is a slightly easier version of the original version.
10. Say you challenged somebody's turn, and you lose the challenge. What happens (North American version)?

Answer: You lose your turn

It is suggested that you check the dictionary before any challenge. If you should win your challenge, the challenged player takes back his tiles and misses his turn. Use your challenges wisely :-).
