Answer: Garam masala

The term 'garam masala' is from Urdu and means 'hot spice'. There are many forms of this spice blend, containing varying amounts of the spices mentioned in the question along with cloves, peppercorns, cinnamon, mace, fennel seeds, etc.

Answer: Lentils

Dhal is a pureed lentil dish containing onions, tomatoes and spices. It's great with bread, rice or as a side dish to other dishes.

Answer: Spinach

Saag is actually the Hindi term for 'spinach', so clearly you could not do without it in this dish! Paneer is the Hindi term for cheese, so as you can guess it's kind of a creamy spinach dish...excellent with rice and/or bread.

Answer: Popadom

Popadom is alternatively spelled 'poppadum' or poppadom'. Originally it comes from the Tamil language of southern India/ Sri Lanka. Popadoms can also include peppercorns or spicy peppers, and are delicious dipped in yogurt or other sauces.

Answer: Yogurt

Raita is essentially a yogurt side dish that is virtually a must with any good south Asian meal. It is very similar to tzatziki in that it contains the same main ingredient (yogurt, or 'dahi' in Hindi) and chopped vegetables (such as cucumbers) and spices.

Answer: Dessert

Kheer is prepared with boiled milk, rice, raisins and almonds. Oh yes, don't forget the cardamom seeds! I can never eat just one bowl of kheer.

Answer: Babul

Chapatti, nan (or naan) and paratha are all names for Indian breads. Popadoms, puris and rotis may also qualify under this description. Babul is a type of tree found in the Indian subcontinent.

Answer: Tandoori
