Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With the definition of "shaping of metal or wood on a lathe", what craft produces bowls and containers, knobs and handles, and other decorative and useful items?

Answer: Turning

It's possible to buy 'blocks' from which pieces can be created using a lathe. Depending on the wood, there maybe imperfections that add texture and beauty to the finished item.
2. Fishing is a popular pastime in waterways all over the world. What fish was introduced into Australia in the mid 1800s, at the same time as salmon?

Answer: Trout

The introduction of trout was really an accident, as the person responsible, James Youl, had thought he was only introducing salmon (originating in the Atlantic). However, both salmon and trout hatchlings were released and both ultimately thrived. Both rainbow and brown trout may be caught in Australia.
3. Topiary is the training of live shrubs or bushes into decorative shapes, such as animals or spirals, by trimming.

Answer: True

Topiary is a centuries old practise. They vary in how elaborate they are, from simple spirals and geometric shapes to birds, animals and even ships!
4. Thought to have developed in the 1700s from centuries old techniques used by fishermen and lace-makers, what knotting hobby produces fine lace, used for edging, doyleys and collars?

Answer: Tatting

As with many hand-crafts, tatting is a skill that is dying out. There are people who are dedicated to teaching these old skills to the next generation and it's possible to attend classes in many places.

My mother tried to teach me to knit; sadly I was a lost cause!
5. What might be your hobby if you were interested in truncheons, totokias, or tonfa?

Answer: Weapons

Each of the listed are early weapons made of wood. All three weapons were also sometimes used for law enforcement. Totokias originated in Fiji, while its thought that the tonfa originated from agricultural tools, and came from Okinawa (now part of Japan).
6. Telemea is a 'brined' cheese (aged in salty water) that originates in which European country, best known for blood-thirsty tales?

Answer: Romania

Telemea is a soft white cheese, into which cumin seeds are sometimes added for extra flavour. One recipe I found was for grated Telemea served on top of a corn meal 'patty' served with goulash.
7. I hate to bring up this next hobby. Some people actually *like* exercise! Acrobatic exercises like somersaults, back flips and twists, performed without the use of special equipment, developed from entertainers known as what?

Answer: Tumblers

Tumbling and acrobatics as a means to maintain fitness in Ancient Greece is well documented. In the middle ages, tumblers, jugglers and minstrels would perform at court, in the presence of the King and other royalty.
8. People collect funny things, and that in turn sometimes earns the collector a funny name. What ephemeral item does a tegestologist collect?

Answer: Beer coasters

A postcard collector is called a deltiologist, while a collector of cigarette cards is a cartophilist. I don't know anyone who collects the back of note pads, but I suppose there's someone out there who does!
9. In photography, what term is given to a lens that makes a subject appear closer in the picture than they actually were when the picture was taken?

Answer: Telephoto lens

Of course, contact lenses go on your eyes. Most modern fisheye lenses will capture a very wide field of vision, up to 180 degrees. Anethum graveolens is the botanical name for dill!
10. Also a 2007 movie, what Hasbro toys have Autobots on the side of good, and Decepticons as the bad guys?

Answer: Transformers

Transformers first appeared in 1984 and have become increasingly complex.
