Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How is movement determined in Ultima, other than pawns?

Answer: By whichever row the piece is in, except pawn and king

If the piece is in row 1 for white, row 8 for black, then it can move 1 square in any direction. If the piece is in row 2 for white, row 7 for black, it can move 2 squares, etc. Kings can move one square in any direction. Pawns may move the same as above, except for the fact that they may not move diagonally, while other pieces can.
2. Who created the game of Ultima?

Answer: Robert Abbott

It was first published in the book "Abbott's New Card Games," despite the fact that it is not a card game.
3. How does a chameleon capture?

Answer: By whatever method the piece it is capturing uses

I find chameleons somewhat limited because of their inconsistent capture methods. I find it hard to think that way, and I also believe chameleons should be able to capture other chameleons somehow, which is not allowed.
4. How do withdrawers capture?

Answer: By withdrawal directly away from a piece

Withdrawers and long-leapers are interesting in that they use exactly opposite methods for capture, so that in practice it is hard for a long-leaper to capture a withdrawer and vice versa.
5. Coordinators capture by a unique method in coordination. This is applicable only if the coordinator and piece X are on different rows and columns. When they are the coordinator and piece X form two vertices of a rectangle. If the coordinator is moved to create this rectangle then any enemy pieces on the other two vertices of the rectangle are captured. If piece X is captured the coordinator is useless. What is piece X?

Answer: The King

Having the enemy coordinator as piece X wouldn't make much sense. That would mean that the coordinator would not be able to capture the other coordinator, and the black player's immobilizer could be destroyed by the second turn. Remember, if the king moves, the rectangle is not applicable.

The same applies to pawns, any piece can be used, but the pawns must move and entrap the piece being captured between the pawn and the other friendly piece.
6. Which set of pieces (On a chess board) must be split into two different pieces in Ultima?

Answer: Rook

To distinguish between the coordinator and immobilizer, I usually flip over the immobilizer.
7. How is stalemate forced in Ultima?

Answer: If both players agree to a draw

If the immobilizers are both captured, play simply continues with no immobilization. The only way to enforce stalemate in Ultima is to agree to a draw. Robert Abbott also indicated his personal belief in his book, "Abbott's New Card Games," that Chess would be improved if this rule were adopted.
8. How does a long-leaper capture?

Answer: By jumping one space over another piece

A long leaper is arguably the simplest character in Ultima.
9. Is a chameleon used as the same piece in chess as a knight?

Answer: No

The chameleon is represented by the bishop.
10. Which of the following pieces cannot cause check?

Answer: Immobilizer

A chameleon could cause check, but it would not be wise for anybody to cause check without a strong defensive plan because it could be easily taken by the king. A chameleon does whatever the enemy does to capture, so to capture a king it needs to move like a king, so capture by replacement (The capture method of the king) must be directly next to the king by a chameleon. Same with pawns, who are also restricted by movement.
