Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which property is part of a set that has only two properties instead of three?

Answer: Baltic Avenue

There are only two sets that have two properties: brown (Mediterranean Avenue and Baltic Avenue) and dark blue (Park Place and Boardwalk). Interestingly, brown is the first set (also the least expensive) and dark blue is the last set (also the most expensive). Prior to 2008, the brown set of properties was colored purple instead.
2. Your journey around the Monopoly board begins with you landing on the Income Tax space and deciding to pay 10% rather than $200. Taking 10% of $1500 (starting money) is easy so you decide to think of something more complicated. Suppose you have $3,500 in cash and $400 in properties. How much money do you pay to the bank?

Answer: $390

The 10% required for income tax includes not only the money but any property a player has as well. The total is $3,900 (3,500 + 400); therefore, the player must pay 10% of $3,900 which is $390.
In this case, it would have been better to just pay $200 to the bank.
3. The journey comes to a quick halt when you land on a Chance space. Which of the following cards can not be found in both the Chance and the Community Chest stack of cards?

Answer: Advance to the nearest railroad

There are a few cards that can be found in the Chance set and the Community set. One is paying money for repairs. For Chance, it is general repairs-- each house a player owns costs them $25 and each hotel costs them $100. For Community Chest, it is street repairs-- each house a player owns costs them $40 and each hotel costs them $115.

Both Chance and Community chest also has a go directly to jail card and get out of jail free cards--the latter leading to the possibility that a single player can have two get out of jail free cards.

Both sets also have a card that has the player advance to Go and collect $200.
4. You roll the dice and advance to the Electric Company (which belongs to another player). Which of the following is not involved in determining how much money should be paid to that player?

Answer: whether another token is on the same spot

If a player lands on the Electric Company and someone else owns it, the first thing to do is check to see if it is mortgaged. If so, then no money is paid. If it is not mortgaged, then it must be determined whether that same person has the other utility, Water Works. If so, payment is ten times the amount seen on the dice. If not, payment is four times the amount seen on the dice.
The positions of other tokens have no bearing on how much one player should pay the owner of the utility.
5. Another player lands on St. James Place, which is what you own. Normally, rent is $14, but this time, the player has to pay you $28. Why is this?

Answer: You own all of the properties of that color

If a player owns all cards of a set but has no houses or hotels on that property, then payment is doubled. If you own all three orange spots, then St. James Place costs $28 instead of the usual $14. The other two orange spots (Tennessee Avenue and New York Avenue) would be worth $28 and $32, respectively.
6. The journey continues until you stop on a Chance spot. You recall that some Chance cards allow you to move to a different property. Which of the following properties is NOT mentioned by name in a Chance card as a possible location you can advance to?

Answer: Income Tax

There are quite a few Chance cards in which a player moves to another location. They include general locations (advance to the nearest railroad or the nearest utility) and specific locations (advance to St. Charles Place, Reading Railroad, Go, Jail, Boardwalk, Illinois Avenue).
Community Chest also has some of these types of cards but there are fewer of them.
7. As you continue your journey, you take special note of the cost of each property and realize that there is only one set in which each individual property costs the same amount to buy. Which is a property from that set?

Answer: Mediterranean Avenue

The brown set (or purple set prior to 2008) of properties, which consists of Mediterranean Avenue and Baltic Avenue, both cost $60. In all other sets, the last property costs more than the others (usually $20, but for dark blue, the difference is $50).
8. Darn it! You land on somebody else's property and it has a few houses on it! There seem to be several spaces like that. On how many spots on the board is a person guaranteed to lose money no matter what?

Answer: two

Income Tax and Luxury Tax are the only two spots in which a player loses money no matter what. For properties, utilities, and railroads, a player can lose money if they buy the property or have to pay someone who has already bought the property. If a player lands on Community Chest or Chance, then there's a chance that the card that is being drawn will cause the player to lose money, gain money, or move to another location.
9. While waiting for your next turn, you get to thinking about a topic that you really hadn't thought about before. Is there a spot on the board in which a player can never stay until their next turn?

Answer: Yes

Nobody can stay on the "Go To Jail" spot. Instead, they must always move to the Jail spot of the board and they must do so without passing the Go spot or collecting $200. In most of the other spots (excepting Chance and Community Chest in which case movement depends on the card drawn), a player will stay where they are.
10. The journey around the Monopoly board is coming to an end as you pass by a corner. This gets you thinking about the four corner spaces. How many of them will always result in money be either collected or paid?

Answer: one

There are four corner spaces: Go, Jail, Free Parking, and Go To Jail. Of those, landing on--or passing--the Go space earns a player $200. Some people alter the rules so that if a person lands on Free Parking, they earn money that was paid for certain events (income tax, luxury tax, getting out of jail, etc.).

The Jail square can cause a player to have to make a payment, but this is not always required.
