Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As with every race in the 'Warhammer' world, the dwarves have a rich and detailed history and mythology. In the beginning of the dwarven race, there were three living ancestors. Which if these is NOT one of the Ancestor Gods?

Answer: Durin

Grungni is the miner god of the dwarves and was the first to teach the craft of runelore. Grimnir is the warrior god who perished fighting the forces of Chaos in the time when the Chaos Gates were opened. Valaya is the female dwarf ancestor responsible for magic (although dwarfs only use magic bound into runic objects). Durin the Deathless was one of Professor Tolkien's 'Dwarf Lords', one of the primogenitors of the dwarfs of Middle Earth.
2. Dwarves are mistrustful of the powers of magic as manipulated by the wizards of other races. Instead, they bind the powers of the winds of magic to objects using powerful runes. The dwarves who are skilled in this are known as runesmiths and they are amongst the most famous of dwarves. Which of these is not a famous Dwarven runesmith?

Answer: Gotrek Gurnisson

Alaric the Mad, Skalf Blackhammer and Kragg the Grim all have 'master runes' named after them. These are runes of such potency that only one can be used on any given item. Alaric the Mad is especially well known in the 'Warhammer' world as it was he who created the famous runefangs - the swords which are the badges of office for the Imperial elector counts. Shortly before his disappearance, Alaric also created an artefact known as the Nemesis Crown, an artefact which forms the basis of the summer 2007 Warhammer worldwide campaign.
3. The dwarven army can field a variety of hardy troops. Which of the following are unbreakable in the game of 'Warhammer' due to their crazed oaths to seek death in battle?

Answer: Slayers

The Dwarven Slayers are made up of Dwarves who have undergone some great personal tragedy or shame. They take the Slayers' oath and cut their hair into outlandish mohicans, dying it bright orange. They then wander the Warhammer world seeking a heroic and noble death in battle as atonement.
4. Dwarves are famous for their love of many things - mostly grudges and gold, but also beer. Which of the following is a famous Dwarven beer from the Warhammer World?

Answer: Bugman's XXXXXX

Bugman's XXXXXX is named after Josef Bugman, the most famous dwarven brewer in the Warhammer World. Buruna Catsblood is a beer from the world of Titan, the setting for the old fighting fantasy books (now being reprinted). Old Toby is of course a brand of pipeweed from the Shire in Professor Tolkien's Middle Earth, while Old Peculier is a very tasty strong ale from the Theakston brewery in North Yorkshire, England.
5. Dwarves are the inventors and masters of black powder weapons in the Warhammer World. The men of the Empire may have developed new styles of gunpowder weapon, but it was the dwarves who taught the men the original skills. Which of the following is a Dwarven War Machine?

Answer: Flame Cannon

The Flame Cannon is one of the more experimental of the Dwarven artillery pieces, standing alongside cannon, bolt throwers and others. The Great Cannon mentioned above is a larger version of the standard cannon specific to the Empire gunners. A trebuchet is a form of medieval catapult which works on a beam and counterweight system and in the Warhammer World is only available to the Brettonian army.

The Warpfire Thrower is the flame-throwing weapon of the Skaven Clan Skryre.
6. As with fantasy dwarves in all worlds, the dwarves of the Warhammer World are great miners who, for the main part, inhabit the mountain ranges. Which of these is not a dwarven stronghold in the Warhammer World?

Answer: Zirak Zigil

Zirak Zigil is the dwarven name for the mountain also known as Celebdil or Silvertine, the southernmost of the three peaks above Khazad Dum in Professor Tolkien's Middle Earth.
7. The dwarven race is in decline from its years of greatness, and it is maintained by the fostering of grudges. Every dwarven keep and clan keeps a record of deeds and wrongs against them in a Book of Grudges. The most famous Book of Grudges is the Dammaz Kron which details the wrongs done to the entire dwarven race from the beginning of recorded history. The Dammaz Kron is carried into battle by the High King to incite the dwarven troops to great deeds. Who is the current High King of the Dwarves?

Answer: Thorgrim Grudgebearer

Although all these are Dwarven Kings, it is Thorgrim Grudgebearer who is the High King, ruling the dwarven race from the stronghold of Karaz a Karak, the Everpeak. Ungrim Ironfist is the Slayer King of Karak Kadrin, Kazador is the tragic king of Karak Azul, and Alrik is the ultra-traditional King of Karak Hirn.
8. There is a long tradition of distrust, hatred, and open warfare between the dwarves and the elves. At one time the two races traded and lived harmoniously, however after the actions of the evil Malekith, a war began. How was this war known?

Answer: The War of the Beard

The war blew into full hostilities after the High Elven Phoenix King Caledor II shaved the beards from dwarven emissaries, a grave insult, and one which gave it's name to the War of the Beard. Although it is claimed that the dwarves won the War of the Beard, their civilisation has never achieved the glory that it had before, though the dwarves do still hold the original Phoenix Crown, plucked by Gotrek Starbreaker from the head of the dead Caledor II.

It should be noted that to all but dwarfs this is known as the War of the Beard, to them it is known as The War of Vengeance.
9. Just as there has been a centuries-long enmity between the Elves and the Dwarves, there has been a centuries-long alliance between the dwarves and the Empire of men. In recognition of the alliance and in thanks for his saving his life, King Kurgan Ironbeard of the dwarves presented which magical weapon to the founder of the Empire, Sigmar?

Answer: Ghal Maraz - Skull Splitter

Ghal Maraz is the legendary hammer of Sigmar, still carried as an heirloom of the founder, by the current emperor Karl Franz.

All the other three are blades from Professor Tolkien's Middle Earth. Orcrist and Glamdring are the twin blades carried by Thorin and Gandalf respectively, while Gurthang is the reforged sword carried by Turin Turambar during his tragic journeys.
10. At the beginning of their history, some of the dwarven race travelled east over the mountains and were corrupted by Chaos, becoming the Chaos Dwarves. Which of these is NOT a true statement about Chaos Dwarves?

Answer: After they had been warped by chaos, chaos dwarves lost the ability to create gunpowder weapons

The dwarves' warped kin live in huge ziggurats to the east of the World's Edge Mountains where their Sorceror Lords oversee the columns of Hobgoblin slaves creating all manner of devilish machinery in praise of the Father of Darkness, Hashut.
