Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is Sunday today. Kthnos, the team's resident Greek, proposes to the other Animal Farm beasts to leave the stable to grab something to eat. You're visiting the Farm, and Kthnos invites you to join them. Everyone agrees, but some of them are not really hungry. "I have a brilliant idea," Kthnos says. "Let's go to the trendiest place in town, The Snowball Inn. They have a famous Greek drink, which definitely will make you want to eat a horse". What do the Greeks call this anise-flavored alcoholic drink?

Answer: Ouzo

Ouzo is a strong alcoholic drink, even though it has around 40% ABV (Alcohol By Volume) as many other liquors. Its high sugar content, however, prolongs the ethanol absorption in an almost empty stomach and misleads the drinker. That's why Ouzo is commonly served with appetizers such as olives, tomato, fried zucchini, cold meat or seafood (octopus, clams, sardines and others).

2. After having your aperitif, you feel competitive enough to try your hand at some table shuffleboard. The origins of table shuffleboard date back to 15th Century Europe. What country is credited with inventing the game?

Answer: England

In 15th century England, the game was known as "shove (or slide) groat". A groat was a large British coin worth four pence. Pennies, then specially-designed weights were subsequently used.

Shove groat was especially popular in the Staffordshire, Winchester and Wiltshire regions.

3. Hanging on the wall in this quirky bar is a long, narrow tube of glass with a trumpet-shaped opening at one end and a funny-looking bulb at the other. As the Snowball Inn is used by only responsible drinkers, it serves exclusively as an ornament and conversation piece, but what is it?

Answer: A Yard of Ale glass.

A Yard of Ale glass is a long drinking glass which holds around 2.5 - 4 pints of liquid, depending on the diameter. The earliest reference to this type of vessel can be found in the journal of a man named John Evelyn. In 1685 he wrote that the Sheriff and the Commander of the Kentish Troop in Bromley were drinking to the health of King James II from a "glasse of a yard long."

Answer: Smokefree law

This law was brought into effect in England in July 2007 and aims to protect customers and staff from the damaging effects of inhaling second-hand smoke.

5. As an Australian regular at the Snowball Inn, amazoncowgirl spends a lot of her time playing the "Pokies". What is she playing?

Answer: gambling machines

It's a rare Australian pub or club that doesn't have at least one gaming machine on site (with the exception of pubs in Western Australia, which doesn't allow gaming machines in any venue except a casino). In 1999, Australia boasted 21% of all gaming machines in the world, which represented, on a per capita basis, five times more gaming machines than in the US at that time.

Answer: The Who

'Pinball Wizard' was a hit for the English rock band, The Who, back in 1969. The song reached fourth position in the UK charts. Guitarist Pete Townshend wrote and performed the song with The Who. 'Pinball Wizard' appeared on the rock opera album 'Tommy' in a special Elton John guest performance.

Answer: Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem

"Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem", whose cellars are carved from the rocks beneath Nottingham Castle, was built for William the Conqueror in 1068. It was established in 1189 and was formerly known as "The Pilgrim" because it catered to pilgrims and knights on their way to fight the Crusades in the Holy Land.

Answer: Low cost meal served at lunchtime

The counter lunch is quite popular in Australian pubs and they offer lower cost dining for lunch. For example you can get a good steak with salad and chips for under AUD$10!

The counter lunch is generally served between 11 and 2 during the week when most working Australians are at lunch.

The balls are returned until the time is up when a bar drops to stop them. The players continue to play until there are no balls remaining. The winner is the player with the most points. Lindy challenges you to a game. But what is this game called?

Answer: Bar Billiards

Bar Billiards became popular in England in the 1930s, especially in pubs, as the game is only played from the end of the table and therefore needs less space as players do not have to walk round the table. The first pub league began in Oxford in 1936 and was quickly joined by leagues in other towns in the South of England and the Channel Island of Jersey, where it remains popular. The game is unlike traditional billiards and snooker as there is a time limit to play, which is usually between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the timer in the table.
The object of the game is to gain the most points by potting the 8 balls ( 7 white and 1 red) into the holes at the top end of the table. The 9 holes are worth from 10 to 200 points, with the 3 highest scoring holes guarded by pegs or skittles. Knocking one of these over means that you either lose your score for that break or your total score. Potted balls return under the table to be played again until the time runs out and the bar drops to stop them, then the remaining balls are played until the table is cleared except one. The final ball must be potted into the 200 point hole, which is behind the black peg, the one which causes your entire score to be lost!

Bar Billiards has lost some of its popularity with the advent of Pool but there are still many areas of Southern England and Jersey where it is still popular.

12. The Snowball Inn is modelled very closely after an iconic Brisbane pub, the Brekky Creek Hotel. As a consequence, the garden bar features Brisbane's most famous beer from wooden casks, the only Aussie beer to be served so, anywhere. What beer is famously served this way "at the Creek"?

Answer: XXXX (Fourex)

Brisbane's Fourex bitter has been produced by Castlemaine Breweries at it's Milton's site since 1924. The name is derived from the long standing tradition of using X's to indicate the strength of an ale, NOT, as some south of the border would have you believe, because Queenslander's can't spell beer!

Answer: meat pies

In Britain, many fans enjoy eating meat pies during half time at football matches. Every once in a while, there aren't enough pies for everyone. It is common for the home team's fans to heckle a larger player from the visiting team with the "who ate all the pies" chant.

14. The Snowball Inn prides itself on being a safe, responsible establishment while still being fun for everyone. We highly discourage drinking and driving, not only is it illegal, but it is very unsafe. You're happy to find out that Dave has refrained from drinking tonight and has volunteered to be the designated driver for anyone who needs a ride. In which part of the world was the designated driver concept developed?

Answer: Scandinavia

It is always a tragedy when somebody is killed because of a drunk driver. The designated driver is someone who stays sober during the party in order to provide everyone a safe ride home. The concept was developed in Scandinavia beginning in the 1920s, and a formal program was established in the 1980s. It was imported to the United States on a large scale in 1988. A popular slogan stated, "Friends don't let friends drive drunk." So if you've been drinking, please don't get behind the wheel of a vehicle.

"Me, me!" he bellows and proceeds to order a mixture of Guinness and Champagne. "If it's good enough for Alannah Myles, it's good enough for me!" What was his order?

Answer: Black Velvet

Apart from being a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1990, a 'Black Velvet' is also a cocktail made from stout beer and Champagne. It was created in London in 1861 to mark the death of Prince Albert - the colour symbolising the black armbands worn by mourners.

A variation of this drink is the 'Poor Man's Black Velvet' where cider, a cheaper ingredient, is used instead of Champagne.
