Why Can't I Have It My Way? Trivia Quiz

Some of my favorite fast food menu items here in the US have disappeared over the years. Some were dropped because they weren't broadly popular, but I'm convinced that some disappeared just because I liked them. Do you remember any of these?

Question 1 of 10
1. Introduced in 2005, according to the TV ad it was "So big, breakfast will never be the same". The Enormous Omelette Sandwich weighed in with 730 calories, 45 grams of fat and almost 2 grams of sodium. Which restaurant chain crowned its breakfast menu with this monster? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. McDonald's sold "McSpaghetti" in the late 1970s.

Question 3 of 10
3. Before Taco Bell started thinking outside the bun, they called themselves "The Fresh Food Place" and offered a sort-of hamburger on their menu. The sandwich was sloppy Joe style taco flavored ground beef with cheese, lettuce, and tomato on a bun. What did Taco Bell call this creation? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. A fast food buffet? The Superbar was one of my favorites from its introduction in 1988 until it was phased out, disappearing finally in 1998. "The Garden Spot", a nice salad bar, was featured along with an Italian "Pasta Pasta" station and a "Mexican Fiesta" station all for $2.99. A little red haired girl with pigtails offered us the Superbar at which fast food chain? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. McDonald's premium salads have been a popular addition to the menu, but the first salad offering under the (US) arches didn't go over with customers. Salad fixings came in a plastic cup with a domed lid, designed so the customer could add the dressing, replace the cap and shake the salad to coat it with dressing. What was the name of this product? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. At this chain, kids received a paper pirate hat and could order "Peg Legs" from the menu. I was grown but I still loved the Peg Legs - chicken wing drumsticks battered and deep fried. I did get funny looks from people when I put on my paper hat but how else could I stay in touch with my inner pirate at this restaurant that served up these delicious chicken prosthetics? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Once again my taste buds were in the minority when I discovered Pickle-O's. Dill pickle slices, battered and deep fried, Pickle-O's are tangy, Southern and delicious. Sadly they're also gone. What chain sent a carhop on skates to deliver Pickle-O's to my car? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. I never cared much for the Big Mac but the Bonus Jack is a similar double burger that I love. Unfortunately the restaurant that sells it only offers it occasionally as a special item. Where can I order my Bonus Jack from "The Clown"? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Prior to 1966 Catholics were prohibited from eating meat on Fridays as a penance. McDonald's noted a dip in business on Fridays in areas with large Catholic populations. They arranged a competition between two alternative non-meat sandwiches to determine which would go onto the menu permanently. The winner was the Filet-o-Fish which is still the chain's fish offering. The loser was an early attempt at a meatless burger. What offering didn't even come close to appearing on McDonald's menu? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Attempting to offer something for their health conscious customers (both of them), in 1990 Dairy Queen offered an alternative to their very popular soft serve ice cream product, the Blizzard. Made with frozen yogurt, the item languished on the menu for almost ten years before it disappeared. What did DQ call their "healthy" Blizzard? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Burger King

The Enormous Omelette Sandwich was "Two slices of melted, American cheese, two fluffy eggs stuffed with three crispy strips of bacon, and a sizzling sausage patty, piled high on a toasted bun". It enjoyed initial success but fell prey to criticism for its high fat and caloric content (along with big brother the "Meat'normous Omelet Sandwich").

The Enormous Omelette is still available in some countries.
2. McDonald's sold "McSpaghetti" in the late 1970s.

Answer: True

Mickey D gave us a short-lived dinner menu in the late 70s. McSpaghetti was part of that menu along with fettuccine Alfredo, pizza, and lasagna. McSpaghetti is still popular with McDonald's customers in the Philippines where the pasta is served alongside McNuggets.

Answer: The Bell Beefer

The Bell Beefer was Taco Bell's answer to fast food burgers. It was fairly popular after its introduction in the mid 70s but lost ground to more traditional Tex-Mex items and was discontinued in the mid 90s. For a time ardent Bell Beefer fans brought buns with them to Taco Bell and ordered the ingredients to make their own sandwich.

Answer: Wendy's

Wendy's Superbar was popular but high maintenance compared to making burgers. There are still plenty of Superbar fans around and at least three Facebook pages exist to lobby for its return.

Answer: McSalad Shakers

Introduced in 2000, McSalad Shakers were available in Chef Salad, Grilled Chicken Caesar and Garden Salad varieties selling for about $2.50. The "innovative" and "convenient" packaging didn't catch on with salad lovers and they were phased out in favor of larger, traditionally packaged salad offerings.

Answer: Long John Silver's

Founded in Lexington, Kentucky in 1969, Long John Silver's relied heavily on the pirate theme in its first few years of operation. My gourmet friends and I loved the Peg Legs but other adults didn't agree and Long John replaced them with boneless chicken breast strips called "Chicken Planks".

Answer: Sonic

Sonic skated the Pickle-O back for an encore appearance in 2003, but sadly it didn't turn into a permanent menu item. Some Sonics have a "secret menu" of cancelled foods made of ingredients still used in other items and at one of these outlets you can give the waitress a nod and a wink and order Pickle-O's as long as the law isn't watching.
8. I never cared much for the Big Mac but the Bonus Jack is a similar double burger that I love. Unfortunately the restaurant that sells it only offers it occasionally as a special item. Where can I order my Bonus Jack from "The Clown"?

Answer: Jack in the Box

The Bonus Jack consists of two burger patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, and two pickle slices on a three-piece bun. To my taste, what sets it apart from the Big Mac is Jack's Secret Sauce, clearly superior to McDonald's "special sauce". Jack in the Box, a San Diego based chain localizes menus for geographic regions to a greater degree than most fast food operations.

In Hawaii, Jack offers the Paniolo Breakfast (a platter of Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice). In the southern US, you can order biscuits and sweet tea, while a Date Shake is on the menu at locations in Imperial County, California where dates are a major local product.

Answer: Hula Burger

This is not an item I would miss had I ever tried it. A Hula Burger was a thick slice of grilled pineapple covered with melted cheese served on a bun. Is it any wonder Filet-o-Fish won the competition? Apparently taking a degree in marketing destroys one's taste buds.

Answer: Breeze

The chain reported that demand for the Breeze was so low that the frozen yogurt frequently passed its expiration date and had to be thrown out before it sold. I certainly patronized my neighborhood DQ while the Breeze was on the menu but I really don't remember it. Perhaps my brain simply refused to process the concept of something healthy on Dairy Queen's menu.
