Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is the most successful German musical. It opened in 1992 in Vienna, Austria, and was moved to Essen, Germany, in 2001. It is about the most popular empress from the 19th century. What's it called?

Answer: "Elisabeth"

Of course, "Sisi" (1838 - 1898), the wife of Franz Joseph, the second-to-last emperor of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. The musical was written by Sylvester Levay (music) and Michael Kunze (book & lyrics), and it became famous all over the world.
2. Who performed the leading role at both premieres, in Austria and in Germany, of Levay's and Kunze's 1992 musical?

Answer: Pia Douwes

The role of Elisabeth made Pia really famous, though she wasn't a "nobody" before that. She's from the Netherlands, an amazing and charismatic actress with a really stunning voice. Pia sings the role on both highlight-records (Vienna and Essen), whereas you can hear Maya Hakvoort (she's Dutch, too) on the complete recording from 1996.
3. The other leading role in the Levay's and Kunze's 1992 musical is a "timeless", handsome man, but he's not human. What is personified in him?

Answer: Death

The authors claim that Elisabeth longed for death all her life, and so Death appears throughout the show. He is handsome and charming. They first meet when Elisabeth has an accident as a child, and Death accompanies her through childhood, marriage and fame.

He loves her, too, so there is kind of a happy end when they are united in the end. Our most popular musical singer, Uwe Kroeger, created this role - which made him famous - in Vienna and Essen, and he is simply irresistible. You can hear him on both highlight-records. On the complete recording, Addo Kruizinga (another Dutchman) played the role.
4. The empress's murderer was an Italian anarchist. He leads through the show, commenting on what is happening, and in the prologue he stands before the Judge of the Souls who asks him why he killed her. Do you know his name?

Answer: Luigi Lucheni

Lucheni murdered Elisabeth because the Duke of Orleans - whom he actually wanted to kill - didn't show up (that's a fact!). In the musical, Death tells him to (he also gives Lucheni the weapon), and Lucheni tells the Judge that he murdered the empress because she wanted him to - she was in love with Death.
5. Finally: The empress's song became the greatest hit of the show. What's it called?

Answer: "Ich gehoer nur mir"

Would be translated as "I Belong To Me". Elisabeth doesn't want to be told what to do, she wants to break free from all the obligations and conventions. "Der letzte Tanz" ("The Last Dance") is sung by Death at the wedding of Elisabeth and Franz Joseph, expressing that she might have resisted him this time, but someday the very last dance will be his. "Die Schatten werden laenger" ("The Shadows Grow Longer") is a powerful duet between Death and Elisabeth's son Rudolf where Death persuades Rudolf to join in a Hungarian conspiracy - with fatal results that lead to Rudolf's suicide in 1889.

This song is my favorite. "Wenn ich dein Spiegel waer" ("If I Was Your Mirror") is sung by Rudolf to his mother, begging of her to save him from the emperor's anger after his conspiracy has failed.

She refuses, thus abandoning her son and breaking the last chains still holding her to her husband and the court.
6. This musical is based upon a movie by Roman Polanski. It premiered in 1997 in Vienna, where it was hugely successful, and moved on to Germany a few years later. The music was composed by Jim Steinman, book and lyrics are by Michael Kunze again. It won several I.M.A.G.E.'s (International Musical Award Germany), and and the Broadway premiere was in 2003. What's it called?

Answer: "Tanz der Vampire" ("Dance of the Vampires")

Based on "The Fearless Vampire Killers". Polanski also directed the musical. A great show, very funny and very close to the movie.
7. Steve Barton performed the leading role at the premiere. Which role?

Answer: Graf von Krolock

Steve was fantastic. He died in July 2001, so the vampire was his last big success.
8. What's the name of Chagall's daughter, whom Alfred immediately falls in love with?

Answer: Sarah

Conny Zenz created this role in Vienna.
9. Jim Steinman wrote many songs for Bonnie Tyler, and one of them made it into the show. Which one?

Answer: "Total Eclipse of the Heart"

"Totale Finsternis". The lyrics have been translated into German and slightly changed, but some lines have remained, e. g. "Forever's gonna start tonight". It's Sarah who sings this song, together with von Krolock, when she wanders through the castle, wondering about what will happen to her and why she is there.
10. Who sings the song "Tot zu sein ist komisch" ("Death Is Such An Odd Thing" - original version!)?

Answer: Magda

It's Magda, the maid, when she looks at Chagall's corpse. During the song, Chagall awakes, bites her and transforms her into a vampire, too.
11. Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay worked together again on a musical about one of our most famous composers. Which one?

Answer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

The show is called "Mozart!". It opened in Vienna in 1999 and came to Hamburg in 2001.
12. What is so special about the show?

Answer: The man and the genius are played by different actors

There are two Mozarts on stage: The man Wolfgang, and the infant prodigy Amadé who follows the man like a shadow. While Wolfgang is gambling, fighting or loving, Amadé only sits there, composing. At a certain point, he starts to write with Wolfgang's blood.
13. The "bad guy" is the Archbishop of Salzburg. He employs the composer, but he humiliates him, and he wants to keep him under glass, not allowing him to be free and do what he wants. What's his name?

Answer: Hieronymus Colloredo

Colloredo's songs simply rock! Every time he comes on stage, the guitars play the loudest. In Vienna, it was Uwe (again) who played him, in Hamburg Felix Martin took over (and he was just as great as Uwe!).
14. One of the few outstanding hits of the show (the other songs don't stand alone) is the last song of act one, sung by the protagonist and the choir. It's called...?

Answer: "Wie wird man seinen Schatten los?"

Would be translated as "How Can You Get Rid Of Your Shadow?". Wolfgang realizes that his genius will follow him wherever he goes. It is during this song that Amadé first writes with blood instead of ink.
15. True of False : The story starts when the protagonist is born.

Answer: False

It starts when Wolfgang is about five years old, and he already plays the piano better than his father.
