Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which city was Alfred Sisley born?

Answer: Paris

Sisley was born in Paris, France, on October 30, 1839 to British citizens. His father was a wealthy businessman, and his mother was a music connoisseur. Although Sisley lived in France virtually all of his life, he never became a French citizen. Supposedly, his command of the English language was limited.
2. Sisley became an accomplished impressionist painter. What was his specialty?

Answer: landscapes

Sisley enjoyed painting landscapes and countryside scenes. He painted some beautiful winter pictures such as "Snow on the Road, Louveciennes". Some people criticized Sisley because they felt that he didn't try to diversify his style in the way that Monet and Renoir did.
3. Why did Alfred Sisley go to London in 1857?

Answer: to study business

In 1857, the 18-year-old Sisley left Paris for an extended stay in London. It was his father's wish for him to learn about the business world, but Sisley wasn't very interested. While in London, he continued to work on his painting. He returned to Paris in 1860.
4. Who was Alfred Sisley's teacher in the 1860s?

Answer: Charles Gleyre

Gleyre, a Swiss artist, set up a studio in Paris in the early 1860s. His students included such painters as Sisley, Renoir, Monet and Bazille. Gleyre often took his students outside in order to paint natural scenes. It is evident that Sisley and Monet were influenced by "impressionist" styles.
5. Who was Eugenie (Marie) Lesouezec?

Answer: Sisley's long-time lover

Lesouezec and Sisley met in 1866- she was a model who was five years older than Sisley. They stayed together for more than 30 years and produced two children. They finally agreed to get married in 1897.
6. Sisley used the word "pont" in several of his painting's titles. What does the word French word "pont" mean in English?

Answer: bridge

Sisley's "The Bridge at Villeneuve la Garenne" (1872) is an excellent example of his impressionistic feeling and texture. "Snow" is "neige" in French; "sea" translates to "mer"; and "street" means "rue."
7. Which event coincided with the Sisley family business failure in 1870?

Answer: the Franco-Prussian War

In 1870 Prussian forces had a war with the French, eventually taking control of Alsace-Lorraine. The Great Fire of London occurred in 1666, while the telephone would not be invented until 1876. After 1870, Sisley's ride on the family "gravy train" ended, and he had to work hard to make a living selling his paintings.
8. Which of these masterpieces was not painted by Alfred Sisley?

Answer: "The Woman in the Green Dress" (1866)

"The Woman in the Green Dress" was painted by Monet, one of his early works. Unfortunately, most of Sisley's early student paintings have disappeared forever. "Lane Near a Small Town" (1864) is the earliest known Sisley painting to exist today.
9. In 1978, what happened to Sisley's painting "The Lane of Poplars in Moret"?

Answer: It was stolen from a museum.

The painting was on loan in Marseilles when it was stolen. It was later recovered in the city's sewer system. "The Lane of Poplars" would later be snatched again in 1998 and in 2007.
10. How did Alfred Sisley die?

Answer: He was stricken with throat cancer.

Sisley had suffered from throat cancer for several years and died at the age of 59 in his beloved town of Moret-sur-Loing, France. He passed away shortly after the death of his wife Marie. It was only after Sisley's death that his reputation as a great painter was properly recognized.
