Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which musical is the 'Heaviside Layer' a part of?

Answer: Cats

The Heaviside layer is an actual scientific structure referring to a layer of ionised gas at 90 - 150 km above the earth.

In the musical it is used as a symbol for Heaven. Every year, at The Jellicle Ball, Old Deuteronomy chooses one cat who may go up and begin a new life.

It has been suggested that T.S. Eliot was using a scientific pun here as an Ionosphere is made up of both anions and CATions.
2. Which song is NOT from 'The Likes Of Us"?

Answer: High Flying Adored

"High Flying Adored" is from "Evita".
It is sung at the inauguration ball - Ché sings the first three verses asking Eva what the price of her fame will be.

She answers him in the final verse.

"High flying, adored, I've been called names but they're the strangest
My story's quite usual, local girl makes good, weds famous man
I was slap in the right place at the perfect time
Filled a gap--I was lucky
But one thing I'll say for me
No-one else can fill it like I can."
3. Which musical is Honoria Glossop a character in?

Answer: By Jeeves

Honoria is Bertie's ex-fiancée whom his friend, Bingo Little, is now interested in.

There is a classic moment of English farce when Bertie (who is driving his car) comes across Bingo who is competing in a charity walk for hedgehogs to try and impress Honoria.

Bingo jumps in Bertie's car but then they come across Honoria further along the road. Bingo doesn't want Honoria to know he was cheating so he jumps in the boot but then they find out that Honoria has twisted her ankle so she jumps in the car for a ride.

Honoria then starts reminiscing with Bertie about their past and what could have been...
4. "Holly and the Ivy" is sang during which couples' wedding?

Answer: Laura Fairlie and Sir Percival Glyde

This is sung by the congregation during their wedding in "The Woman In White".
5. "Home by Now" is from which musical?

Answer: Whistle Down The Wind

This is sung by Swallow, Brat and Poor Baby near the beginning of the musical.

They have gotten held up by saving the sack of kittens that Ed threw in the river to drown. It's getting dark and they know they will get into trouble.

"The locusts are singing, the sun is red
It's gotten so late somehow
There's gonna be trouble
You know what Dad said
We should have been home by now."
6. Which song do both Pearl and Dinah sing a rendition of?

Answer: He Whistled At Me

Pearl sings this is the first act when she is explaining her dream train to Rusty.

"And then he whistled at me
He looked in my direction
He whistled at me
This could be my connection
All because he whistled at me
He sure knew how to woo me
He whistled at me
I'm gonna hitch him to me"

Dinah sings the reprise towards the end of the second act when she disconnects Electra and makes some rather scathing comments about his 'sexuality'.

"I'm fed up with all this racing,
This electric thin I'm chasing,
Doesn't have that certain something,
That a girl expects to hear,
He never whistles at me!
It's damaging my status,
I don't think he can whistle at me!
He lacks the apparatus."

Both "Half A Moment" and "Hallo Song" are from "By Jeeves".

"Heaven On Their Minds" is the first song from "Jesus Christ Superstar."
7. Homeless children are the central theme of which musical?

Answer: The Likes Of Us

The musical is based on the life of Thomas John Barnardo.

10. Which song is from "Jesus Christ Superstar'?

Answer: Hosanna

This is sung on Palm Sunday during Jesus and his disciples' entry into Jerusalem.

Caiaphas meets Jesus and demands he disband the crowd that has gathered.
Jesus replies that there would be no point :

"Why waste your breath moaning at the crowd?
Nothing can be done to stop the shouting
If ev'ry tongue was still the noise would still continue
The rocks and stones themselves would start to sing"

"Haven in the Sky" is sung in "Tell Me On A Sunday."

The Company sings "Hitching and Switching" in "Starlight Express."

"Hand Me the Wine and the Dice" is sung during George's wake in "Aspects Of Love."
