Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was in the hospital, for surgery. On the way down the elevator, my dangling teddy bear got caught between the elevator doors. He rocketed to the roof of the elevator and he got decapitated. What did he lose?

Answer: His head

Decapitation refers to the removal of the head. It is another word for beheading or the removal of a living thing's head.

I am really glad it wasn't me that got caught in the elevator doors!

My poor teddy bear lost some of his stuffing all over the elevator and the two nurses, who were wheeling my gurney, really gave me the evil eye. I hid my face under the covers and grinned. I couldn't help it!
2. Do you think that's odd? When the doors opened, it made such a horrible noise that I jumped from the gurney and careened into the wall, bruising my pilonidal dimple. That hurt! What did I bruise?

Answer: Hollow area above the buttocks

A pilonidal dimple is a little hollow area just at the very top of the crease that goes between the buttocks or sacral area of one's bottom.

I'm telling you, that really does hurt when you clobber that part of your rear end! I didn't think that I would be able to ever sit down again.
3. We made it to the waiting area before the surgery when I had to use the bathroom. I got up and my gown was caught in the railing. I got yanked back toward the gurney and smacked my Rectus Femoris Muscle. That turned black and blue awfully fast! What did I smack?

Answer: Knee muscle

The Rectus Femoris Muscle is part of what makes up the Quadriceps Femoris Muscles. They are a large, fleshy group of muscles located on the front and sides of the thigh. The four muscles are a primary means of our being able to extend our knee. These four parts include the Rectus Femoris, Vastus Lateralis, Vastus Medialis, and Vastus Intermedius. These parts connect the ilium and femur to a common patellar tendon. This tendon passes over the front of the knee and attaches to the patella or knee cap.

So now you know! I smacked my knee. Besides the bruise I got on my knee, there was quite a cut too. It required two stitches later. The nurses hurried to bandage my knee before I left a trail of blood all over the floor.
4. Well, I hobbled to the bathroom and as I shut the door I got my Distal Phalanx squashed in the door. I really let out a yell. What on earth did I squish?

Answer: Tip of finger

The phalanges are those little bones that make up the skeleton of our fingers, thumbs and toes, one of which is called a phalanx. Each of our finger and our smaller toes has three phalanges. The thumb and also the big toe each have two of these phalanges. The phalanges that are nearest the body of the hand or foot are called the "proximal" phalanges. The phalanges, at the tips of our fingers and toes are called the "distal" phalanges. When there are three phalanges, the middle one is called the "middle" phalanx.

Surgery got delayed as I got brought down to x-ray. My poor finger was broken and they put a cast on it, then sent me back to the operating room.
5. Finally, we got into the operating room and they pulled out a needle that they were going to stick in me. I took one look at that thing and I immediately suffered with syncope. What happened?

Answer: I fainted

Syncope is a temporary loss of consciousness. The individual will lose consciousness and posture resulting in fainting. Another word for syncope, besides fainting, is "passing out". Usually a temporary insufficient flow of blood to the brain causes this. It can be caused by emotional stress, pain, or being too hot among other things. Some illnesses with the heart and lungs, for example, can also cause syncope or fainting.

When I fainted, I gouged my left shoulder on the I.V. pole, on the way down, and that required eight stitches. I had my knee stitched up at the same time.
6. I was in the recovery room and started asking if I could go home. I tried to get up and fell back clobbering my parietal bone. Goodness! That really sounded tinny and sure made the nurses come running! What did I hit?

Answer: Head

The parietal bone is a bone which covers the top and side of the head. It is actually a major cranial bone. It roughly covers the parietal lobe of the brain.

My brains rattled and my teeth shook as the sound of rock hitting tin settled down. The nurse put an ice pack on the injury after she assessed the damage by sifting through my hair. She said I cut my noggin a little! Quickly, the same doctor who stitched my arm and my knee came in and had to give me three stitches in my head. I didn't feel it, because I was still kind of groggy!
7. Once I was more alert, I was wheeled up to my hospital room. When the nurses left, I looked around and noticed the beautiful flowers up on the shelf. I hooked my risorius muscle on the corner of the shelf! Blood spurted everywhere and I hollered. What did I injure now?

Answer: Side of my mouth

The risorius muscle draws the angle of our mouth outward. This muscle is quite commonly called the "laughing muscle".

I sure wasn't laughing! The stitching doctor wasn't amused either, as he put four stitches into the side of my face beside my mouth. I was filled with tears as he said for me to just lie down and rest.
8. I settled down for a nap, when the television guy came in! He handed me my headset and in the process I bent the wrong way and sprained my right Deltoid muscle. I could hardly move. What did I sprain?

Answer: Shoulder muscle

The deltoid muscles are located on the shoulder. It is the muscle that forms the rounded outer side of the shoulder. The deltoid muscle actually is comprised of three sections. There is a front head, side head and rear head to the muscle.

The television guy went flying out of the room to get another nurse. I was sure that I was doomed now, as she stomped into the room!
9. The nurse came into my room. As she came toward me, she tripped on my slippers, falling on top of me. She landed so hard she cracked my talus. What got broken?

Answer: Ankle bone

The talus bone is part of the ankle and connects the leg to the foot. It is the second largest bone of all of the tarsal bones. It supports the tibia bone, which is above it.

I was off to x-ray again and they put a cast on my foot. The people in the hospital were starting to be on a first name basis with me now!
10. When they brought me back to my room, I was put into bed and they tethered me. What did they do to me?

Answer: Tied me to the bed

Being tethered means they tied me to the bed so I couldn't get up. A tether is a cord that anchors anything that is movable to a stationary support.

I felt trapped! I was only at the hospital to have some gall stones removed. I was supposed to get out the next day.

My mom came to visit me and was astonished at my appearance. There I was, tied to my bed with a headless teddy bear, a bruised bum, a bruised knee, a broken finger, a stitched left shoulder, a stitched head, a stitched mouth, a stitched knee, a broken ankle and a sprained right shoulder. I was going to remain in hospital for a few extra days. My mom just shook her head and started laughing! She knows that I'm clumsy, unlucky and what!
