Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Lion Tamer", "The Goldfarb Variations", "West End Avenue"

Answer: The Magic Show

An odd show that was little more than a device to display the illusions of Doug Henning. The fifth longest running B'way musical of the '70s.
2. "I Got Love", "Skinnin a Cat", "First Thing Monday Mornin'"

Answer: Purlie

"Purlie" opened very quietly in 1970 and became the hit of the season. A great show dealing with racial stereotyping.
3. "Tea For Two", "'Where Has My Hubby Gone?' Blues", "Take a Little One Step"

Answer: No, No, Nanette

A fabulous 1971 revival of the Vincent Youmans/Irving Caesar classic. The cast included Ruby Keeler(!), Helen Gallagher and Bobby Van.
4. "Something Was Missing", "NYC", "Maybe"

Answer: Annie

This sickeningly cute musical was an adaption of Harold Gray's "Little Orphan Annie" comic strip. Music by Charles Strouse, Lyrics by Martin Charnin (who also directed) and book by Thomas Meehan. I wanna play Agatha Hannigan - what a role!
5. "Nothing", "What I Did for Love", "One"

Answer: A Chorus Line

The last of the great 'book' musicals, "A Chorus Line" blurred the distinction between 'chorus' and 'lead'. A landmark musical.
6. "Pretty Women", "Epiphany", "By the Sea"

Answer: Sweeney Todd

Starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury, this must be the grisliest musical ever produced - and one of my favourites! The line "And we have some shepherds pie peppered with actual shepherd on top" from the song "A Little Priest" is my most favourite line of all time! You've gotta love Sondheim!
7. "Good Old Girl", "Bus From Amarillo", "Girl, You're a Woman"

Answer: The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

This fun show opened in 1978. The film version, released in 1982, starred Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds.
8. "High Flying Adored", "Dice Are Rolling", "The Art of the Possible"

Answer: Evita

The Broadway version featured performers Patti LuPone, Mandy Patinkin and Bob Gunton. The last (?) production to combine the talents of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.
9. "I Rise Again", "We've Got it All", "Never"

Answer: On the Twentieth Century

Most of the action for this show-business farce takes place aboard a train. The original 1978 production featured stunning art-deco sets by Robin Wagner.
10. "A Puzzlement", "I Have Dreamed", "We Kiss in a Shadow"

Answer: The King and I

Yul Bryner returned to Broadway for this brilliant revival of the 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.
