Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You're playing Wii bowling with your nephew Cody, and he tells you that you just "got owned". What does he mean?

Answer: You got beaten badly

To "get owned" means to be so badly beaten by someone else that they "own you", as it were. The noun form of this is "ownage". A variation of "owned" is "pwned", which is pronounced "poned". The origins of this variation are unclear, but the most likely is that it is a misspelling of "owned" in which the "p" was wrongly typed instead of its keyboard-neighbor "o", and it caught on.
2. Your daughter Britney looks at your new outfit and yells "that's sick!" What is she telling you?

Answer: It is a really cool outfit

Teens of the 2000s use the word "sick" to mean "extremely cool". This is one of many teen-speak words in which a previously derogatory word has been deliberately used in its opposite meaning to achieve a strong effect - see also "bad", meaning "good", and "ridiculous," which is often used as "really good".
3. Your son Dylan is mad at you because you are "dissing" his music. What have you done?

Answer: Insulted his music

The verb "to dis" means "to insult". It is derived from the word "disrespect", and has its origins in hip-hop music.
4. Your daughter Katie does not like the new book you bought her, saying it is "too emo". What is she saying?

Answer: It is too dark and depressing

"Emo" is a derogatory adjective applied to people who wear black clothes and dark makeup, and have depressed personalities. So-called "emos" are roughly equivalent to those called "goths" in the 1990s. "Emo" comes from the term "emotionally troubled." Furthermore, anything that feels dark and depressing is labeled with the adjective "emo" as well.
5. Your next door neighbor's son, Zack, is angry because someone "jacked" his bike. What happened?

Answer: His bike got stolen

To "jack" something is the steal it. This word is old street-slang, probably derived from "hijack" or "carjack". It has been popularized by rap music.
6. When your niece Ashley leaves the room, she mutters "peace out". What has she just said to you?

Answer: Goodbye

The origin of "peace out" is mixed. Hip-hop artists have often closed-out speeches or songs with "peace", a blessing to the listener and a call for non-violence in society. "Out" has come to be added onto the end of "peace" as way of saying "I'm out of here", something like the radio-code "over and out". Thus "Peace out" is literally saying "Peace to you, I'm done, I'm leaving".
7. Us old folks would say "it's alright" when someone apologized to us. What did teens typically say in the early years of the 21st century?

Answer: "It's all good"

"It's all good" has replaced "it's alright" for today's teens. Often, this phrase is repeated, as in "it's all good, it's all good."
8. If a teen today bumps into you, they might say "my bad". What do they mean?

Answer: Sorry, it's my fault

"My bad" is the closest you will get to an apology these days, I'm afraid. It literally translates to "my mistake".
9. Your daughter Dakota asks you if her "BFF" can stay overnight. You start to sweat. What is she asking you?

Answer: If her best friend can come over

"BFF" means "best friend forever" and is most often, but not exclusively, applied by a female to another female friend. It was made popular by Paris Hilton, who applied it to then-BFF Nicole Ritchie. Sadly, BFFs rarely seem to maintain that relationship for very long!
10. When the neighborhood kids see your car, they tell you it's "ghetto". What do they mean?

Answer: It is a piece of junk

Sorry, but your '88 Ford Taurus SHO just got dissed. Guess kids today just don't appreciate imitation-wood side panels like we did "back in the day".
