Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Isis had retrieved Osiris' body parts, with the help of Nephthys, Isis decided to make Osiris come back to life. Which god came to help her with this matter?

Answer: Anubis

In ancient Egypt, Anubis (or Anpu in Ancient Egyptian), was the jackal-headed god of embalming and mummification
2. Finding that Osiris couldn't be brought back to life, what did Isis and her 'helper' do?

Answer: They embalmed Osiris and he became the first mummy.

In this legend, Osiris was the first mummy ever. After he was embalmed by Anubis, he was led by Anubis down into the Netherworld, and became the 'King of the Underworld'.
3. What does Isis' name mean?

Answer: Throne

4. Before Isis left for a town, a goddess named Selket came to offer her some help. What kind of help did she give to Isis?

Answer: She gave Isis scorpions to protect her wherever she went.

Selket, the goddess of scorpions and venomous stings, helped Isis by giving her 7 of her magical scorpions to protect her wherever she went. The names of the scorpions were: Petet, Tjetet, Matet, Mesetet, Mesetef, Tefen and Befen.
5. When Isis arrived at the Town of the Two Sisters what did she search for?

Answer: Shelter

In the legend, when Isis arrived at the town, a rich family woman refused them accommodation. Instead, a humble beggar woman offered Isis some food and shelter.
6. What happened to the local rich family after they turned Isis away?

Answer: The rich woman's baby was stung by something.

When the rich woman had refused them shelter, the scorpions got angry and six of them combined their poison with the seventh scorpion and it sneaked into the rich house, where it stung a young baby almost to death.
7. Isis rescued the family, who were then very grateful and offered her food and shelter for the night. What happened after that?

Answer: Isis had to go back to the delta, to give birth to Horus.

After lying low for several months, Isis decided she would have to go back and give birth to Horus in a secluded place.
8. Later in the legend, Isis returned to the delta, to give birth to her son, Horus. Not knowing that Seth had found her hiding place, Isis briefly left Horus in the care of the scorpions. Seth found Horus and decided to kill him on the spot. He created a snake, but out of what?

Answer: Some dust, and baby Horus' drool.

Seth caught some of baby Horus' drool while he was sleeping, and with some clay, created a poisonous snake. The scorpions were fast asleep when the snake bit Horus.
9. When Isis returned she found her baby dying and the scorpions horrified. Because she was weak from her birth, Isis didn't have the magic to help her son. Who came to her rescue?

Answer: Thoth, he's always ready to lend a helping hand.

Thoth healed Horus, and fortunately for the baby, he survived the deadly snakebite.
10. What does the name 'Horus' mean?

Answer: 'He Who is Above'

His name probably had something to do with the fact that he was a sky god. Records show that Horus had several names: 'Horus of Behdet', where he was shown as a winged sun disk, 'Ra-Horakhty', where he was one with the sun god, 'Harpocrates', where he was depicted as a child, and 'Harmachis', where he was shown as a sphinx.

His cult centre was 'Hierakonpolis', which was Greek for 'City of the Hawk'.
