Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Something excellent OR a sweet snack?

Answer: crackerjack

Cracker Jack the snack (made of popcorn, molasses, and peanuts) was introduced at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. It was immortalized in the song "Take Me out to the Ballgame": "...Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack...." Did you know there is fat free CJ available now?
2. Military footwear?

Answer: jackboots

These are shiny black leather boots that extend to the knee or higher.
3. To steal someone's vehicle when the driver is still in it?

Answer: carjack

Carjack comes from hijack, but my dictionary says hijack's etymology is unknown.
4. A smallish hunting dog: _______ _______ terrier?

Answer: Jack Russell

Apparently the name will be changed to Parson Russell Terrier in 2003. This is the name of the founder of the Jack Russell Terrier Association of America. Personally, I like Jack better than Parson. That cute dog on "Frasier" is a Jack Russell terrier.
5. You can buy a fancy Swiss Army one?

Answer: jackknife

Also the name for a kind of dive in which the diver opens and shuts like a jackknife. Swiss Army knives often have little saws, ice-picks, scissors, toothpicks, corkscrews, and even forks and spoons! In the 60s and 70s, many Baby Boomers carried them everywhere. Can't take them on planes these days, obviously!
6. Any of various fishes OR a sailboat?

Answer: skipjack

There are skipjack tuna; ladyfish and bluefish are called skipjacks, too.
7. A stinging insect?

Answer: yellowjacket

Unlike honeybees, these wasps can sting multiple times. They have flashy yellow and black stripes to warn predators not to mess with them.
8. A tropical tree with bluish-purple flowers? (This is cheating, a bit--no K in this one!)

Answer: jacaranda

Jacaranda trees grow all over Los Angeles, where I grew up. They are very pretty.
9. A huckster or haggler?

Answer: cheapjack

A guy who sells schlocky merchandise.
10. A male donkey?

Answer: jackass

Hope I didn't offend anybody with that one! A female donkey is called a "jenny."
