Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is my birthday today and I am celebrating my first quinquennium. How old am I?

Answer: 5 years

A quinquennium is a period of 5 years.
A 25th birthday is called a quadranscentennial.
A 50th birthday would be a semicentennial or quinquagenary.
A 75th birthday is called a dodranscentennial.
All of these are technical terms, not widely used, thank goodness. "Silver", "Gold", "Platinum" etc. are much nicer.
Believe it or not, septaquintaquinquecentennial has been used for an 175th anniversary - good grief!
2. I am conducting an inquiry into quintessence. What could I be investigating?

Answer: Perfect examples of 5 objects

"Quintessence" has at least four meanings: the most perfect embodiment of something; the pure, concentrated essence of a substance; in medieval philosophy, the fifth essence or element, the others being air, fire, earth, and water; and in modern physics, a hypothetical form of dark energy used to explain the accelerating universe. It is also referred to as the ether.

Have you found the quintessential quiz yet? I'm still working on it.
3. I see a quincunx. What am I looking at?

Answer: The five face of a die

A quincunx was originally a coin issued by the Roman Republic with a value of five twelfths (quinque and uncia) of a bronze coin called an as. It now means four items arranged in a square with a fifth in the middle, as in the five spot on six-sided dice.

The flag of the Solomon Islands features this pattern. In computer graphics it is used as a pattern for anti-aliasing (smoothing jagged lines). The towers of Angkor Wat are arranged in a quincunx to represent the five peaks of Mount Meru. In astrology, it is an aspect of 150°, encompassing five signs of the zodiac.
4. My friend called me a total quidnunc! Why would she do that?

Answer: Because I am a busybody

A quidnunc is someone who wants to know all the latest gossip. The neighborhood quidnunc knows everyone else's business. The word is derived from the Latin "quid" meaning "what?" and "nunc" meaning "now".

OK, so what are you doing right now? Oh I see, that's very "interesting". Just wait until I tell everyone else!
5. My friend and I decide to lie on the quitch together so we can talk about things. What are we lying on?

Answer: A grassy river bank

Quitch is any of various grasses having rapidly spreading underground stems, sometimes regarded as troublesome weeds.

It is of some use in herbal medicine. The rhizomes contain inositol, mannitol, mucilage, saponin, vitamins A and B, and volatile oil. It is an antimicrobial, diuretic and liver tonic, and has been used to treat urinary tract disease, kidney stones and prostatitis. It has also been linked to staggers syndrome in cattle.
Personally, I would rather eat Brussels sprouts than grass.
6. I'm feeling decidedly quinic today. Why?

Answer: I've drunk too much coffee

The mildly acid flavour of coffee is imparted from quinic acid, along with, primarily, citric and malic acid. Coffee also contains formic, acetic and lactic acid. Quinic acid has been associated with an increase in perceived acidity when coffee is kept hot over time, for example in a jug on a hotplate.

Quinic also pertains to quinine and related compounds. Quinine however, is an alkali used to treat malaria, and is an ingredient of tonic water, imparting a bitter flavour. Some people have been known to experience a potentially dangerous reaction to the small amount of quinine in tonic water.

I've had too much coffee today - how about a G & T with ice and lemon?
7. What am I doing as I experience quietus?

Answer: I'm dying

Quietus is the moment of passing from life to death, especially when death is seen as a release. The Medieval Latin phrase "quietus est" or "he is quit" was the name for the writ of discharge exempting a baron or knight from payment of a fee to the king. The expression was later shortened to "quietus" and applied to the termination of any debt.

It can also mean something that suppresses an activity, as in "putting the quietus on his political ambitions."
8. While browsing the internet, I discover that quillaia is in my drink. Which of these might I be drinking?

Answer: Root beer

Quillaia is often listed as an ingredient of root beers and other soft drinks, where it is used as a foaming agent. It can also be found in dairy products and puddings as a preservative. It is also a humectant, meaning that it keeps foods moist, and an emulsifier, helping to mix oils and water.
Quillaia is the milled inner bark or small stems and branches of the soapbark tree and as a food additive it has the E number 999.
9. The court-martial has handed me a long jail sentence and dishonorable discharge after finding me guilty of quislingism. What have I done?

Answer: I collaborated with the enemy

Vidkun Quisling was appointed Minister President of Norway after the country was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II. His political party, "Nasjonal Samling" (National Unity) was based on the German "Führerprinzip" (Leader Principle) of the Nazi Third Reich, and Quisling was the party's Führer. After the war, Quisling was tried for high treason, and executed by firing squad.
The term "quisling" has since become a synonym for collaborator or traitor, and "quislingism" to describe the act of cooperating traitorously with an enemy that is occupying your country.
10. What is a quirt?

Answer: A riding whip

A quirt is a riding whip consisting of a short, stiff stock and a lash of braided leather. The word is believed to derive from the American Spanish "cuerda" (cord) or Mexican Spanish "cuarta" (whip).

"Lead your horse - if they jump us, give him a lick with the quirt and hide in the brush." ("Cow-Country", B. M. Bower.)
"The boy staggered back, half-blinded, as Bill Bender raised his heavy quirt and cut him full across the face with it." ("The Boy Scouts On The Range", Lieut. Howard Payson.)
