Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I found a boy who attends a place of education. Which boy did I discover?

Answer: Schoolboy

A schoolboy is someone who attends school. The word dates from the sixteenth century, and was used by Shakespeare in Jaques's famous speech in 'As You Like It', which begins 'All the world's a stage'. Shakespeare described the schoolboy as 'whining' and 'creeping like snail unwillingly to school', so not much has changed.
2. I found a boy who was actually a girl, who was acting in a way more associated with the opposite sex. Which boy had I found?

Answer: Tomboy

The expression 'tomboy' was originally used in the early sixteenth century to describe a boisterous or rough boy. The earliest use of the name to describe a girl who acts in a boisterous manner dates from 1592, according to takeourwordforit.com.
3. I found a boy who was a nickname for an American soldier in World War I and also a mascot for an American grain company. Which boy do you think I've found now?

Answer: Doughboy

The origin of the name is usually attributed to the Mexican-American war in the nineteenth century, but it came into common use for the World War One Expeditionary Force. By the second World War, it had mainly been replaced by the term 'GI'. The Doughboy is the mascot for the Pillsbury Company, and was created for an advertising campaign in the early 1960s and has remained popular since. His official name is Poppin' Fresh.
4. I found an edible boy, a cross between three other fruits and named after the first man to create them. Which kind of boy is this?

Answer: Boysenberry

The boysenberry is a cross between the raspberry, loganberry and blackberry and was initially developed in California, USA, by Rudolph Boysen. Although he had given up his experiments, and the farm, some remaining plants were discovered and the fruit was named in recognition of Boysen's work. Simon and Garfunkel mentioned the fruit in the song 'Punky's Dilemma' from the album 'Bookends', released in 1968.
5. I found a boy who sings in a group, often in church, with other boys. Which boy was he?

Answer: Choirboy

The boys sing in choirs as trebles, before their voices have broken, starting at around the age of seven. More recently, choirs have included girls with the more neutral expression of chorister being used. A naïve or clean living man can also be described as a choirboy, usually in a derogatory sense.
6. I found a boy who is bold, bright and dashing. Which adjectival boy did I come across?

Answer: Flamboyant

Someone who is flamboyant is outgoing and showy, and the word can also be used to describe any flower or pattern which is eyecatching. The word derives from the French word 'flambé', meaning flaming, which is also used in cookery. There is also an architectural style called flamboyant, which is florid and ornate, particularly from the Gothic period.
7. I found a boy who doubles up as a hairstyle and an attendant at a wedding. Which boy was he?

Answer: Pageboy

The pageboy hairstyle is cut straight and turned under at the ends and originally became popular in the 1950s. It was believed to represent the haircuts of boy pages, assistants to noblemen, in English history and the name was adopted for the hairstyle. A pageboy is also the male equivalent of the bridesmaid as an attendant to the bride, although he may never forgive you when he sees the photographs as an adult.
8. I found a boy who refused to patronise a particular store or deal with a certain person. This boy was carrying out which action?

Answer: Boycott

Boycott came into the English language from the name of a real person, Charles Boycott, who was a land agent in Ireland for an English landlord. Following a poor harvest in 1880, the tenants were unable to pay their rent and carried out a protest against Boycott by refusing to carry out any work for him. Their lead was followed by local businesses and even the postman, leaving him totally isolated. Boycott's name became indelibly linked with the action, and is now used as a noun to describe any organised refusal to associate with a business or person.
9. I found a boy who is in the airforce. What kind of boy is he?

Answer: Flyboy

Flyboy is often used as an alternative to pilot, and usually refers to someone in the armed forces, although it can be applied to any man who can fly an aircraft. It is also used sometimes in urban slang to describe someone who is very good looking.
10. I found a boy who doesn't work for a living and spends his time enjoying himself, often on inherited money. What kind of boy did I discover this time?

Answer: Playboy

The traditional playboy has a private income and is able to devote himself to the pleasures of life, including expensive holidays, casinos, private yachts and beautiful women. The name was used for the American magazine founded in 1953 by Hugh Hefner.
