Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which musical does the male lead sing the following lyric: "So let's keep the party polite, never get out of my sight"?

Answer: Guys and Dolls

In "Guys and Dolls," Sky Masterson, a gambler, sings these lyrics in the song "Luck be a Lady," after his new love, a missionary named Sarah Brown, discovers he has merely been spending time with her to win a bet. She then wants nothing more to do with this poor gambler, who in fact has been changed from his gambling ways.

His only chance to prove this to her lies in bringing a dozen sinners to a prayer meeting, which will only happen if he wins his next roll with the gamblers. Thus, he desires "luck" to be a "lady," and politely show what he'd like to see on the dice.
2. A seductive servant sings the following lyric in which musical: "I always get what I aim for, and your heart and soul is what I came for"?

Answer: Damn Yankees

The song is called "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets." Lola has been hired by the devil to tempt new baseball slugger Joe Hardy into cheating on his wife. With this, the devil, a sly salesman named Mr. Applegate, believes he will have thoroughly won the soul of young Joe, who has already entered into a deal which has rid him of his previous elderly body.
3. In which musical does the audience hear one character ask of another, "What's the story, morning glory?"

Answer: Bye Bye Birdie

Many such curious questions are asked in this song, called "The Telephone Hour", including "What's the tale, Nightingale?" and "What's the word, Hummingbird?" The audience here observes the teens of Sweetapple, Ohio, as they discuss the romantic interests of Hugo Peabody and Kim MacAfee, who are supposedly "going steady for good."
4. Which musical contains a practical single woman who declares, "All I want is a plain man, all I want is a modest man"?

Answer: The Music Man

Marian Paroo, otherwise known as "Marian the Librarian", sings this lyric in the song "My White Knight". She is alluding to the fact that the only man who has pursued her of late is neither "plain" nor "modest", but an energetic travelling salesman, who she knows to be a con man.
5. "Let's pretend we're riding on a kite. Let's imagine we're flying through the air!" This lyric is sung in an emotional song from which musical?

Answer: Little Women

"Some Things Are Meant to Be" is sung as Beth, the younger sister of the protagonist Jo, is dying. She refers to how her death seems unavoidable, and begs her sister to "let her go now."
6. Which musical contains this lyric: "There's a darkness which comes without a warning, but I will sing you lullabies, and wake you in the morning"?

Answer: Les Miserables

This song, sometimes called "Come to Me" and sometimes simply referred to as "Fantine's Death", is sung by Fantine, the mother of an illegitimate daughter, and Jean Valjean, as Fantine lies on her death bed, hallucinating visions of her daughter. After singing several lines to her daughter, who is in fact miles away, she begs Jean Valjean to watch over her child after her own death, which he promises to do.
7. "Think of it, a secret engagement! Look, your future bride! Just think of it." This excited, yet secret outburst occurs in which musical?

Answer: The Phantom of the Opera

Sung to the tune of "Think of Me", in the middle of the song "Masquerade", Christine Daae is excited about her engagement to her childhood beau Raoul, while also nervous that the Phantom, who is in love with her, will find out. Raoul, however, hushes her fears, following her outburst by saying, "But why is it secret? What have we to hide?"
8. "Ya got one, two, three, four, five, six, pockets in a table. Pockets that mark the difference between a gentleman and a bum." Which high-energy musical contains this comical lyric?

Answer: The Music Man

This song, "Ya Got Trouble", is sung by travelling salesman/con man Harold Hill as he convinces the town of River City of the evils of a pool table and its effect on their youngsters, subsequently getting them to agree to his forming of a boys band. The latter occurrence will, conveniently, involve the townspeople paying him for uniforms and instruments, while in reality, Harold Hill "don't know one note from another."
9. Which musical contains the lyric: "Has it ever crossed your mind that I miss you? Is there any chance we'll find the joy that we shared at the start?"

Answer: Footloose

"Can You Find It In Your Heart?" is sung by Vi Moore, as she begs her husband to be kinder to their daughter, even though she is disobedient. She begs him to understand that she misses the man he used to be, before their son's death.
10. "There was a time when you were the person in motion. I was your wife; it never occurred to want more." This lyric is from which musical?

Answer: Ragtime

Another song with a wife addressing her husband, "Back to Before" is the emotional climax to this emotional show. 'Mother' sings of the days where she and her husband were satisfied with their world, and her life was simple and happy - a world to which she cannot return, following all her experiences with injustice.
