Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Miss Trunchbull say the Latin motto of the school translates to in English?

Answer: Children are Maggots

Early in the musical she tells Miss Honey that the school motto is "Bambinatum est maggitum", or "Children are Maggots". This certainly shows the "love" she has for the students in her school!
2. During the song "When I Grow Up", what is the unique activity that the students do while they are singing?

Answer: Swinging on swings

While this song highlights all of the wants and desires of the children once they are able "do what they wish," it also includes a solo by Miss Honey, who admits that she still has her own insecurities and limitations despite being a "grown-up."
3. Several scenes throughout the play are set in the library, where Matilda tells the story of an ill-fated couple to the Mrs. Phelps, the local librarian. At first it is thought to be generated from Matilda's vivid imagination; what does the story turn out to be?

Answer: The story of Miss Honey's parents

The story of the escape artist and the acrobat lady who falls to her death starts out as something from the imagination of this special little girl; it turns out to be identical to the story of Miss Honey's own parents' fate.
4. In addition to being a television addict, Mr. Wormwood is the stereotypical sleezy used car salesman. He pulls off what he thinks is the deal of a lifetime when he sells a large fleet of old defective cars to what group?

Answer: Russian Mafia

At the end of the show, Mr. Wormwood's life is nearly brought to an end when the defects are discovered by the purchasers. Matilda saves her parents' lives by speaking to the Mafia boss in Russian, which she learned in order to read a Russian novel in its original language.
5. Before the end of the intermission, Mr Wormwood and Matilda's brother come out and sing a song prior to the start of the second act. Her brother plays a few notes on a ukulele, and sings what word?

Answer: Telly

The Wormwoods admonish poor Matilda for wanting to read too many books, telling her that a few television shows will give her far more knowledge than a thousand books. Mr. Wormwood belittles books by a number of authors, including Shakespeare and Dickens.
6. Miss Trunchbull prides herself because of having been an Olympic athlete. What sport does she demonstrate in the play that she did in the Olympics?

Answer: Hammer throw

During the show she swings a young student around like a hammer and releases her; a few seconds later the girl drops onto the stage from the sky, only to jump up totally unscathed!
7. Matilda combines her mother's platinum hair dye with her father's special hair tonic. What is the result of this mixture?

Answer: Mr. Wormwood's hair becomes a lovely shade of green!

Later, Matilda shows again that "Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty," by putting super glue on the inner band of her father's hat!
8. What does Miss Trunchbull call the device she uses to punish misbehaving children?

Answer: Chokey

Although not seen on stage, Chokey is described as being a small box lined with spikes. During the play one student returns from being locked in Chokey, obviously affected by this inhumane treatment.
9. Miss Trunchbull leaves in fear after a message magically appears on the chalkboard. Following Miss Trunchbull's departure the students break into a song including what words?

Answer: "We are revolting children"

Bruce leaps onto a school desk, pulls out a microphone and starts the class in the singing of the song "Revolting Children".
10. How does the cast come out on stage for the curtain call?

Answer: On scooters

Even Miss Trunchbull comes out on a scooter during the reprise of "When I Grow Up." Only Matilda walks out.
