Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I will start with a simple one to get the ball rolling. Zeus sat upon his throne and ruled the world from which mountain?

Answer: Mount Olympus

While growing up, I mistook Mt. Olympus to be purely mythological, but Mount Olympus is an actual mountain in Greece. The massive mountain stands 9,750 feet and is situated just under 100 kilometers from Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki.
2. Zeus is known by most as the God who ruled the Gods. Zeus was also known under which title?

Answer: Zeus Herkeios

Zeus protected the house and its courtyard, so was titled Zeus Herkeios. Herkios is from "herkos" which means "fence". The head of the Greek family would sacrifice on Zeus' altar, normally located in the courtyard. Zeus was also known as Zeus Xenios, Zeus Ikesios, and Zeus Phyxious.
3. Zeus controlled the rain, hail, snow, thunderbolts and lightning. Therefore one of his symbols was the Thunderbolt. However, Zeus had two symbols. What was the second?

Answer: An eagle

The eagle was a symbol of Zeus because of its association with height and lightning. The eagle is a bird that can fly higher than all other birds. The eagle would take to the sky and when it saw its prey, would swoop down to it like lightning.
4. Zeus was a powerful god, and was considered the leader of gods and men for his many good traits. He was a protector. What other quality made him a great leader?

Answer: Justice

Many admired Zeus for his justice. Zeus was called upon by gods and men alike when any dispute would get out of hand. Zeus was always able to settle all differences while keeping both sides happy.
5. Although it is common knowledge that only women can give birth, there are two occasions in which a man gave birth: a horrible movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger called "Junior" and when Zeus gave birth. Which goddess was birthed by Zeus?

Answer: Athena

This is an interesting situation, a man giving birth. But when Zeus heard that Metis would have a son who would one day usurp his power, Zeus swallowed her whole. However, Metis was pregnant, and nine months later, Athena was born, having sprung fully grown and armored from Zeus' head.
6. The next three questions pertain to the love life of Zeus. To rob the first line of this chapter from the book, "The love affairs of Zeus were truly innumerable." Zeus' affairs presented him with many children. Artemis and Apollo were children of Zeus and Leto. Who was the child of Zeus and Maia?

Answer: Hermes

Hermes was the messenger of the gods and was also known as the patron of thieves.
7. Zeus slept with Mnemosyne for nine straight nights, and when she finally gave birth it was not to just one child. Who were the results of this affair?

Answer: The nine Muses

The nine muses were the patrons of letters and the arts. At festivals on Mt. Olympus, the Muses would sing their divine song with the cithara of Apollo. Zeus, being a proud father, would watch happily.
8. The Fates were an actual result of a Zeus affair. Who was the mother of the Fates?

Answer: Themis

Themis was a titan, and was the goddess of Justice.
9. Which of the following is NOT the name of one of the Fates?

Answer: Eunomia

Clotho was responsible for weaving the thread of life into each human being. Lachesis determined what fate would fall to his lot. And Atropos was the fate who cut the thread of life.
10. The Fates had three sisters. What was the collective title of the Fate's sisters, three more daughters of Zeus?

Answer: The Hours

The Hours: Eunomia, Dike and Eirene, were the divinities who opened and closed the gates of the heavens. They also "brought to man the fruits of his labours."
