Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Camelot" opened on Broadway in 1960. Which theater was its home?

Answer: The Majestic

The Majestic theater is one of the largest Broadway theaters with an audience capacity of over 1600. "Camelot" ran for over 800 performances.
2. Whom did Richard Burton (1925-1984) consult regarding how to deliver his songs as King Arthur?

Answer: Rex Harrison

Rex Harrison (1908-1990) had great success using a conversational singing style when he appeared as Henry Higgins in 'My Fair Lady'. Burton wanted a similar style for some of his dramatic songs in 'Camelot'.
3. Merlyn is lured away to "Our home 'neath the sea". Who lures him away?

Answer: Nimue

Nimue sings her song to Merlyn from offstage. "Follow Me" is a song of seduction and amazing appeal. It's dreamy quality set a magical tone which connected to Merlyn's magician heart.
4. One of the characters is so vain that he sings a song all about himself. What song is this?

Answer: C'est Moi

When the handsome Robert Goulet (1933-2007) sang 'C'est Moi' as Lancelot, his successful career was assured. His rich baritone voice coupled with his good looks made him a star. It's interesting that in T.H. White's book, 'The Once and Future King', Lancelot is described as ugly. This was not so in this production.
5. In 'Camelot' Arthur calls Guinevere by a pet name. What name does he give Guinevere?

Answer: Jenny

The lyricist, Alan J. Lerner (1918-1986), wanted a less formal relationship between Arthur and Guinevere and therefore used Jenny as T.H. White had done in 'The Once and Future King'.
6. King Pellinore arrives onstage with a dog. What breed of dog was used in the show?

Answer: English Sheepdog

As played by Robert Coote (1909-1982), King Pellinore is comic relief. Adding a shaggy sheep dog as his partner in hunting for 'The Questing Beast' encouraged more laughter.
7. The knights are bored because Arthur's reign is peaceful. They sing a song bemoaning their situation. Which song do they sing?

Answer: Fie On Goodness

The song, 'Fie On Goodness' is a lively and bawdy song with lines including:
"Like the time I beheaded a man, who was beating his naked wife. La De Da, La De Da". The song made its point and offered a bawdiness to the intensely romantic play.
8. Guinevere has betrayed Arthur with Lancelot. She has been found guilty and sentenced. What punishment is decreed?

Answer: She'll be burned at the stake.

During the song 'Guinevere', the chorus sings, "Why would he have chosen 5 a.m. for the queen to burn?" It seems Arthur has ordered the burning for early morning to give Lancelot a better chance to save Guinevere.
9. At one point, Guinevere asks Arthur, "What do the simple folk do?" What is his final answer?

Answer: They sit around and wonder what royal folk would do.

In the 1960 production, Julie Andrews (1935- ) as Guinevere and Richard Burton(1925-1984) as Arthur sang a medieval tune together and Burton danced a lively jig until he was out of breath. This song furthered the plot and the sadness due to the couple's real grief over the adulterous affair between Guinevere and Lancelot.
10. In the final scene, Arthur orders someone to tell the story of Camelot. To whom does he give this order?

Answer: Tom, a young lad, who wishes to be a knight.

Arthur stumbles upon a young lad, who wishes to join the battle as a knight. He tells the lad of 'Camelot' and sends the boy off to keep the dream alive.
