Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What word describes a formal gala in which dancing is involved or a usually round sphere used in games?

Answer: ball

But it's not polite to play ball at a ball. The word describing a dance has Greek roots (ballizein, to dance); the origin of the word that describes a sphere is middle English (bal or balle).
2. What is the word for a wooden object used to strike at a ball or a flying mammal which appeared in the first Dracula movie?

Answer: bat

Of course, you could use a bat to swing at a bat if the occasion arose. The middle English used it to describe a cudgel, while at the same time, to the Scandinavians, it was the flying mammal we all know and love.
3. What is a description of a state of good health or a dug or drilled hole to obtain water?

Answer: well

You have to be well to dig a well, I would suppose. Both uses are apparently from the middle English, "wellen".
4. What is a receptacle from which to eat soup or a ball which is rolled towards wooden pins, in an attempt to knock them down?

Answer: bowl

You simply can't eat soup from a bowl and bowl at the same time. 'Bolle' is middle English for a receptacle, while 'boule' is a French word for ball.
5. What is a musical ensemble or a group of robbers?

Answer: band

A group of musical robbers could be the band's band. 'Banda' is of Latin origin and is an assemblage or group.
6. What word means to describe a high, very sharp incline or the act of making tea?

Answer: steep

The longer you steep the stronger the tea, I've been told. Both uses spring from the middle English 'stepe' (adjective) and 'stepen' (verb).
7. What is a span to permit traffic across a river or gorge and an artificial replacement for missing teeth?

Answer: bridge

It's also a card game which I don't understand. 'Brycg' is old English for a span, while using it in a dental sense is fairly recent and is a shortening of 'bridgework'.
8. What is a word meaning to teach someone a skill or an assembly of cars pulled by a locomotive?

Answer: train

I guess you have to train someone to drive a train. 'Train' is of Latin origin and describes something dragged or pulled. As a verb it probably comes from military usage.
9. What is a word meaning to practice a skill or to bore a hole in something?

Answer: drill

Do you have to drill to learn to drill? The word comes from the Dutch 'dril' as a noun and 'drillen' as a verb.
10. What is a word meaning to raise something, such as wages or prices, or to take a long nature walk?

Answer: hike

When your boss gives you a pay hike, you have more time to take a hike. The word comes from the English dialect 'hyke' which means to take a long, vigorous walk. As a noun, the usage is American and fairly recent.
