12. Which of these historical characters is linked to the origin of the names North and South Carolina?

Answer: King Charles I of England

Caroline of Brunswick was George IV's wife. They got on so badly that George IV did not even invite her for his coronation. King Charles I got involved in a conflict with Parliament and was executed. King Charles II, his son, was allowed to return from France and brought the Restoration to a good end. Caroline Herschel earned herself some fame as an astronomer. Charles X of Sweden was born in 1622, became King in 1654, and died in 1660. He played no role in the history of the U.S.A.
As to the link between the two U.S.A.Carolinas and Charles I, it is a historical fact that Charles I granted a vast area he called Carolana to Sir Robert Heath, his attorney general. When at the Restoration, his son Charles II came to power, he adapted the name Carolana to Carolina.
There is however a French King who should be mentioned too in this context, because earlier French colonists had called one of their ( short-lived) settlements "Charlesfort" in honour of their King Charles IX. This happened in 1562 - long before the English landed at Charles Town! Some historic sources claim that already those French settlers called the whole area ...Carolina.
The origin of the two present-day Carolinas is without any shade of doubt with the first of the two English King Charleses. The slight change of the original name Carolana into Carolina dates back to the Restoration.
The name Carolina had been given long before George IV married his Queen Caroline of Brunswick. And not only did he get on too badly with his wife, ever to allow a colony to be named after her, but his father George III had lost the American colonies already long before.
